As there's a debate as to whether my car is "up to the job" of towing two small horses (15.1 and 15hh) in an Ifor Williams (or similar weight trailer) with a LWB Maverick/Terrano, I thought I'd ask if anyone else tows two with a similar set up?

If you do, how to you get along pulling up hills and under braking on steep downhill banks?

Just for interests. Kerbweight of the vehicle is 1815kgs, Maximum Towing Capacity is 2800kgs and Gross Train Weight is not to exceed 5900kgs.

My sister had a short wheel base Mav and an Ifor and we worked out we could happily tow our 13.2 and 14.1 ok. When we swapped the 13.2 for a 16.3 we upgraded the towing vehicle to a Ranger as we'd exceeded the max towing capacity.

The mav was fine when we had it - no problem towing up hills or accross muddy terrain when towing.

It was not just the weight of the horse (and he was a lot heavier) but the additional gear etc - I think she worked things out on the 85% rule (although I see thats not the current practise?).

Her Ranger is a super cab thingy and I am pretty sure has a heavier Kerb weight than the Mav as it was a short wheelbase one.

Just for reference

Ford Ranger
2 door super cab. Kerbweight 1465kgs, 85% rule 1245kgs and maximum towing capacity 200kgs

4 door super cab, Kerbweight 1720kgs, 85% rule 1462kgs and Max Tow Capacity 2800kgs

Compared to a SWB Maverick/Terrano (2.7tdi, figures are higher for the 3.0litre)

Kerbweight 1724kgs, 85% rule 1465kgs and maximum towing capacity again of 2800kgs.

Doesn't seem that much difference between the two really but I would say they are both up to the job, providing you have the four door version of the Ranger.

I replied above. Similar weights and same towing capacity between both of them. Was a bit alarmed as I noticed how light the two door was, so thankful to hear you have the 4 door.

Thanks Patches - yes it is the 4 door although I see loads of people towing with the 2 door!

Appreciate that - puts my mind at rest.

Back to your original Q though, we always felt the mav was up to the job and def had enough omph for big hills and was heavy enough to pull the trailer down hills rather than be pushed down. Hope you get to the bottom of your problem.

We've regularly used a Ford Maverick (SWB) to tow a 16.3 ISH and a 16.1 TB in a 510 with no problems whatsoever, including some long steep hills.

I'm not sure what the exact weights worked out to now (it was a couple of years ago) but I know it was all above board.

Whatever you tow with, just be aware that the towing weight is NOT the weight that can be controlled by the vehicle, but the towed weight which can be started on a certain grade of hill.
There is no way that a SWB Landrover pickup (3.5T towing)can out-tow a LWB Shogun (2.8T towing), the Landie just has lower gears to crawl away up a hill and 50 mph on a busy motorway is an entirely different matter.
Towing weights are only a guide, LWB helps, vehicle weight helps, wide wheel track helps, low CofG helps. I tow a Wessex Olympian (similar to IW510), carrying 16.1 & 14.2, with a Jeep Grand Cherokee but I would be happy to tow it with a Terrano LWB on a windy day.
