I have a rice Europa, which has an unladen weight of 700 and something kg. I'll only ever be towing 1 horse in it of about 500kg. Looking for a towing vehicle, but fuel economy is very important to me, so thinking of a car rather than a 4x4. It'll only be used as a towing vehicle twice a month on average, less in winter. The rest of the time it'll be my run about and take me to work. Current car does 40mpg so as long as it is around that I am happy, but if I can get better mpg then I'll be super pleased, although doubt I can.

I tow with an old Rover 620 (only because Landrover is once again broken!!) It's fab on diesel & tows lovely although only 1 pony. There are plenty of cars out there legal to tow regarding weights, just ask ROG, he's the towing god on here :D

We have a Mercedes e300 estate which works fine for us. We have ponies and a Bateson trailer.

We are swapping it to a 4x4 but only because we need that for shooting. The Merc has worked well for 5 years though.

The mpg is awful though!!!

I tow my 505 and 16.2 TB with my company car - Mazda 6 Estate. It is the 2.2 diesel sport model and is brilliant - and I still get around 40mpg when towing.

I go out 2-4 times a month and mainly on hard standing or well draining grass - wouldn't want to take anything not 4x4 onto a muddy field tbh!

700+ unladen trailer weight and 500 kg horse needs a vehicle with a towing capacity of at least 1300 but I would suggest 1400+

Will you be needing it to tow in situations where a 4X4 is needed?

If intending to tow on a B licence please post your intended vehicle and trailer specs in the HHO TOWING CLINIC thread - link below
