I just wondered if anyone tows with a Jeep Grand Cherokee.....I am just after peoples experiences with both the the petrol and diesel versions - I am looking at a 52/53 plate so it would be the new mercedes diesel engine.

I tow off the 2002 4.7 v8 petrol absolutely love it, find it gutsy and totally stable with the trailer on the back, have easily towed 2 16.2s up big hills and off muddy fields and never had a problem.
In terms of reliability i have had it 4 years now and other than a few minor ish problems it is been fab ( needed a new battery and a new raditor but both were still originals )
Biggest downside is the fact it is very very thirsty mine mine has averaged 19.2 MPG, and there doesnt seem to be a huge difference in MPG if i am towing or not in honesty.
In short i love mine and find it a fantastic tow car!

We have a P Reg Grand cherokee (petrol) and as MGH says they are very good but very thirsty! We also had to have a new battery and new rad !!

Thank-u both I currently have a 1994 Mits Pajero and is fantastic for towing and would always be hard to replace......but I think I am am ready to upgrade to a newer vehicle, one that we can use for camping holidays aswell.

I use to have one (old 97) loved it to pieces as a car to drive and as a towing vehicle. really nice car but got far too expensive in parts as it got older. So it had to go 4 years ago - oh and it was a alcoholic!! Still see it every now and again and wish I could have it back!!

This is why I am looking to upgrade to a newer tow vehicle with limited funds........my current vehicle is ok but I don't want to be in a position where I am always replacing parts.

My neighbour had one to tow his caravan and loved it but couldnt keep up with the fuel consumption. He had it changed to gas and kept it years only selling it recently as things started to go wrong and it cost him a fortune in parts.

I have a 1998 4l petrol one, I love it, its fab to drive and brilliant to tow with. The fuel consumption isn't too bad 23mpg normally and about 19-20 towing. I only use it to tow with as I have another car to drive every day but I love Jeepy and wish I could drive it all the time. It sailed through the last mot without needing anything done. Actually its been totally reliable the whole time I've had it (1 yr) but its only done 4000 miles in a year.
We even took it on holiday to wales, it was brilliant. It cost us £60 in fuel to get from Eastbourne to Cardiff which I didn't think was too bad at all. We don't hang around either!!

It comes out highest in almost all the tests for towing and off road driving. I towed my horse in my trailer out of the mud at Ayr Show this year with no trouble whatsoever while everyone else was needing towed out by tractors. It was also pretty reliable and mine had done 120,000 miles. I thought there was an issue with carbon monoxide leaking into the cab though which was due to a perished seal, due to where the air conditioning takes its heat from. Get the diesel though as slightly less thirsty and more desireable if you ever resell.
