Who works their dogs?

I put my uncles gundog through her paces when I have her out and about but I'm hoping to start going out shooting with him and working her then.

Will also be helping to train his new puppy when she's old enough

what sort of "working" dog are you meaning? I have a "pet" lurcher who likes to work himself... always of hunting rats/mice/cats

Ive been taking my 8 month springer to gun dog training as my husband shoots. So am looking forward to seeing her in action in the field. Im afraid i think i may have spoilt her though shes also a lapdog in her spare time and apparently this wont do, but she has been very impresive in training. I was told the best gun dogs dont get any affection and are hardy and keptout doors ect. IMO Puppys are meant to be cuddled!!! i cant help myself. We trained her also because her bloodline are all field trial champions on both sides and think it would be a shame for her not to be a worker if we ever decided to breed from her.

I would love to work mine too, again I wouldnt know where to start. Amber wears a backpack loaded with tins of soup on every walk if that counts????

I have working gundogs (but firstly they are soppy family pets), I do a lot of gundog training in the summer and somehow I get roped into organising gundog scurries aswell! I have been asked to train gundogs but have always declined because I wouldn't have the time to put into someone else's dog to do a proper job -

I get such a pleasure from working my dogs

This is a brilliant website for anyone needing advice on gundogs http://p211.ezboard.com/bgundogandbirddogforums

so glad there are people working their dogs! Cant wait to get working again, we are getting another weimaraner next year to bring more blood into our lines, she is from the gunalt kennel as is our weimaraner stud dog, very excited!

I am at present training my kavik to run in harness & pull/ run in front of the bike , mishka my 2nd siberian is also started to show an interest in running with kavik in harness , both working much better together as kavik eggs mishka on & they seem to enjoy it . Hoping to run in some rallies again soon , as usec to work my previous siberians , great to be out wiith your dogs running along in harness on a frosty morning.

Springer works in the winter, hard at it all day doing beat one shoot one, she is four now and whist still insane will retreive to hand.

Lurcher (nearly a Whippet!) loves going out at night with the lamp, he is sometimes successful... and more often not!

Terrier is a law unto herself!

Yup! Thats where the idea came from, but I do see the logic in that it gives them a job, and now she's over two years old she'd grown enough for it, definately gives her more of a workout (but then I'd be tierd carrying around 6 tins for and hour!)

The Lurcher 'works' ... however that term is used loosely as he doesn't tend to listen to well!!

The Ridgeback is my baby and doesn't work.. just gets lots of soppy cuddles

The Patterdale Pup is destined to be a ratter
