Ok I always thought that oats should be rollled, crushed or boiled before feeding them to horses, however I have recently put some of my horses onto a mix that contains whole oats. I've been using it a while and they are all doing well on it and I've had no problems with it, a few oats are passed in their droppings but no more than when I used other mixes with rolled oats. The mix is by a well known feed company and I have emailed them about why they use whole oats. I was just wondering do you think it is ok to feed them this mix, they also get chaff and beet pulp mixed with it.

If you do a search on "Oats" you will find that there are a lot of us feeding whole soaked oats.

It took me a little bit of time to get my head around it. However, without them I believe that my old TB would have been PTS. They pumped her up without fizzing her up.

Do a search, you will find loads of this subject.

The problem is the whole oats are in a coarse mix and I don't know whether to keep using it? I've used soaked oats for putting on condition before but at the moment my lot are in good condition, probably a bit too good!!!

Have to say I've never heard of giving a horse "boiled" oats

Really don't think you have anything to worry about regarding the whole oats....especially as you've already mentioned that the horses are doing well on the mix

I think you just get more fibre from them........ but they are harder to digest than bruised or rolled oats.

I feed Baileys honey oats, which I think are whole too, big lad loves them LOL

Ok don't feel so bad about feeding them now, I was brought up the pony club way so everything was taught by the book. Sorry I think I should have said bruised oats lol!!!! Like I said they seem to be doing well on the mix so will keep them on it. Thanks!

whole oats are just used to bulk out mixes they have very little in the way of nutritional value.

Very sorry, but that's absolute bollox! Oats are extremely digestible and nutritious. Our entire yard is fed on whole oats and are doing extremely well.
