Saw him a few years ago in Leics. It was quite inspirational. The one case I can remember was a horse which would not go within 30 yards of a lorry or trailer. Monty said it would lead itself up the ramp after 30 mins. Sure enough, the horse took itself up the ramp after 23mins. Not sure I agree with everything he does but certainly agree with the philosophy that you should listen to your horse. If it does something quirky, its probably for a good reason.
Hadn't planned to , and am deeply suspicios of all the hype, but do feel I should go and see him to make up my own mind..so will be looking out for a local venue
I saw Kelly Marks doing a show a few years ago....wasn't that impressed at all. I saw her manage to get a horse into a trailer that had issues with it. She used one of the 'Be Nice' had collars that applies pressure to the nose? I saw the state of the horses nose afterwards, it had a huge dent in it. The pressure it exerts is immense, it doesn't look as violent as actually it is....sorry not a fan at all. I'm with the Watcher on this one

I think you would find it interesting.....when I saw him some bits I could see the logic and others bits was not to sure!

I think that was what they call a Dually, Kelly Marks sells them.
I've seen her and Monty in action and, while what they do seems generally to work, I am amazed that people seem to buy into the way their approach is sold as being "gentle". It's very far from that. In my opinion good horsemen don't need to shank horses in gadgets that squeeze hard around their noses.
Worth going to see Monty though I think, I always think it's worth seeing these well known people and deciding for yourself.
I wouldn't mind going to see one, shame i'd have to travel a little way though.
On the headcollar point though, i'm a bit surprised some people on here have deemed it a bit 'cruel'. Our horse had previously been bad to box, very bad experiences to get into the box. He would put his head to the ground and tank off. We tried this with expert opinion and it worked wonders. It did not leave a 'dent' in his nose and it did not take very long for him to get the idea of it. He was schooled around by hand so he understood that if he pulled back he applied the pressure on himself. He is a very happy horse to load now, it's not needed anymore as he happily goes up the ramp with no hesitation. It doesn't squeeze on his nose, only a bit of pressure is applied when he pulls back, when he stops to pull, it releases.
When I saw him he left me cold. Goes on about it being all for Charity - but as he is from the USA we never get to see any accounts... His eyes were just so cold and unblinking, and the way he was treating people who spent tons of money on his merchandise was laughable. Thank goodness I wasn't one of them...
I understand Kelly Marks is a lot nicer than he is though.
I am a fairly suspicious person of the whole NH hype. I am not taken in by much of it and I find Parelli a bit odd if I am honest. However, I have been to see Monty Roberts and Richard Maxwell and have to say I didn't see anything that I would deem cruel. In my opinion it is all about commanding respect from your horse so that it responds to you in the way that you want it to. My mare is a great big bolshy madam and would just drag you off in a normal headcollar and would even attempt to run through a chiffney. I have a be-nice halter and have to say that it has been a god-send with her. It has never left a dent in her nose and she has pulled bloody hard on it!! I use it to reinforce the fact that she has to lead sensibly and not tank off when she feels like it - this is not only an issue of manners but also safety for her and all around her.
I am a natural sceptic and I feel that most good horsemen already do what Monty does but don't have all the marketing and gadgets for sale for extortionate prices! Who out of us has wrapped a leadrope around the nose of a strong horse? This is essentially what the Dually halter is and he commands £40+ for it!
Go and watch a demo, they are eye-opening and not at all cruel in my opinion, however, there is a lot of clever marketing and lots of scary bunny huggers!!
