I'm thinking of getting one to tow a trailer, would recommend it? How does it cope?
Iv got a 15hh section D and 16hh hanoverian.

Any feedback would be great thanks

I have a Freelander and am currently trailer hunting at the moment. As they can only tow a trailer with a Max Gross weight of 2000Kg or less I am having to look for either a single trailer or a lightweight double. I'm told legally it can't tow heavier trailers such as a double Ifor Williams although we did use it once to tow an HB506 with just one horse in it to the vet in an emergency and it coped OK (although you could tell it was working hard up hills and I wouldn't want to do this all the time and definately not with 2 horses in it).

Ive had one. They are not designed for pulling heavy loads a) from a safety point of view weight and power wise and b) the mechanics of it wont take much strain either - I found this out through bitter experience replacing clutch, gearbox and differential probably costing as much as the car did in the first place. Barge pole springs to mind.

Perhaps you might be better looking at say a Nissan Terrano or Mitsubishi shogun?

For that size I'd say no. I'm sure the towing limit on them is 2000kg I think. My oh at the time had one and we used a 700kg trailer with a 450kg max pony and it was great but wouldn't use for horses. Also know someone that had it for double Ifor and two ponies. Seemed to manage well but remember getting stuck in a very muddy showfield!

It will tow a double Ifor with one horse in. The trailer will be 900 - 1000kg so leaves 1000kg for your stuff and horse. Pushing it for 2 horses but well within limits for one at about 500kg.

Meant to say the above is for a full B+E licence. B licence is more restrictive.
