about what other people do or don't do with their horses, is it because at the end of the day no one can look after a horse as well as you look after your own.
fair enough if its neglecting the animal.
or when teenagers are bombing about on ponies, havent most of us done that at some stage?
what one person see's as dangerous is probably already been done by the teenager 20 years back.
after all you live and learn.

what's happened ?? I must add that I learnt to ride at the "hang onto the mane, and if you go under the legs with the saddle just hold on for dear life" pony school (it was a long time ago).. ??? sm x

totally agree
if some of the health and safety lot could have seen what i (and all my mates) got up to with our ponies they would hyperventilate :)

the best way to learn :eek: can't have been more than six, and used to go out on this pony on my own. Way before health and safety...more Thelwell with an ammo pack under it... I went back there not so long ago, and the site has been built on - stood there crying my eyes out ! What blissful, totallu un-p.c. and dangerous days they were. *sigh*. sm x

and you know what, my ponies were never lame a day, and me being knocked out occasionally wasnt a problem, lol, doubt id get away with it with my poncy tb's now though :)

OMG, the jumping lessons....:eek::eek::D:D:D

I did tie my legs to the stirrup leathers once. It worked a treat till the saddle came off.

yup, and soooooooooooo bloody dangerous. I remember a certain ride on a pony called Jason that had no brakes, going to Esher woods, along very busy roads... We got back and I had just grinned all the way round, even tho I was scared ********. Six was such a trusting age *sigh*

That os the reason noone has common sense anymore, we are not allowed to take a risk!!!!!

My 4 year old daughter has started riding by herself with no leader around the fields, I am scared to death for her, but she soooo wants to do it, so toaday she wanted to ride a snapy pony, she did great and made him trot calmly and not bomb on like he normally does, I could not look BTW :D, I dont feel I am cruel or even treating her life loosly but she wants to do it, and she really does need to learn to respect her own boundries!!!!

I was always close by to help, but a little risk makes everyone understand what they are cabable of.

Deep breath by me, as I did not feel this way before she did it :D

Health and safety, all I say is a big RASP LOL

I did round-the-worlds at canter, and scissors at trot - bet they're not allowed any more. Mind you, the sand was very soft as I remember..

My mum still rues the day she let me join her on a donkey ride when I was 1 1/2 years old. Tut, she shouldv'e known better !

and i could take my saddle off while riding a cantering pony, i saw it last year on telly done by a mounted police display ride and thought 'so what?! i used to do that' lol

fair play to her daiydo do and for letting her do it.
tying ponies up out side sweets shops, getting older then tying them up outside small village pubs

I miss the days of galloping round a field in a head collar! And playing games of 'it' in the school. And racing our ponies across a playing field.

Horses, and being grown up, just aren't as much fun.

haha !! Exactly !!! Peeps do wonder why I spend a lot of time riding bareback now - (ahem) cos we couldn't afford a saddle AND a pony innit, and you just learn to love what you have ;)

Ooops, maybe I'm not as grown up as I thought lol!!!! :D

ha wouldnt do it now though, id be like 'do you KNOW how much this saddle cost! and if i DROP it?!'

never tried jumping sidesaddle on a gp saddle never thought of that one ;)
i could dismount with a backflip though

Pony I learn't to ride on stopped after every jump and put his head down, I ended up on the floor more times than I can remember. My first pony reared now and again I thought that was great so I used to make her do it for fun with no hat, bareback and in a headcollar and my next pony bucked me off when I went to buy her and had no brakes, no wonder Dad's grey:D

Still guilty of doing the pub thing :P You'll find me there thursday and fridays with the neddies when it's sunny with a Pimms!!!! Hehe.

Oh - And it's bareback on hairycob!!!!

my last ever pub ride was 15 years ago.......I left my TB in a potential boyfriends hands (he was a rugby player) to go get the drinks in, came out to find he's wrapped the reins round his ankle and the ambulance on it's way. Ooooooooo errrr, maybe that was my h and s eureka moment. He still became a boyfriend, but never played rugby again :eek::eek:

I remember a pub ride, after to which I forgot to take the horses boots off - a day later saw it in the field and thought it had a leg. I recall riding a pony in just a headcollar and galloping across 100 plus of acres of open pasture - screeching to a halt in front of a gate......my goodness we certainly learnt to how to ride in those days! In the early 1980's I worked in a riding school where a couple of kids came with early back protectors - we called them the turtles.......and thought them most odd!!

Love this thread :)

My first pony was pure evil and I have never met a more cunning pony since! Every day I would walk up the side of the orchard and every single time he would turn and bolt back to the stable under the trees, dragging me off! Either that or he would just plant himself and wouldn't budge in any direction!

At home he would jump like a stag, at a show it would take ten fat ladies to get him in the ring and then he would refuse three times at the first jump!

But my God he taught me to ride!! Actually I probably wouldn't let my kids near a pony like that!!

We used to bomb about all over the place, chinstraps over our peaks (cos that was cool) and had masses of fun - it wasn't that long ago that I used to second horse for the hunt in a bowler hat!!

Ahhhhh - those were the days................. :D
