Driving me up the wall! Have been trying to sell my 2 saddles for absolutely ages as I'm after a new horse and need the money until I get a new one fitted, I've tried ebay, on here, preloved, everything! Feel as though I'm going to be stuck with them forever!

How much are you selling them for?

I've managed to pick 2 good quality leather saddles up for £50 each over the last week or so...

Apparently saddles are fetching a lot of money still at horse markets? maybe try one of those :)

My friends a saddler, he says trades very slow. He sells new and used saddles. I generally buy my saddles off him ( used ) as he'll bring a few out for me to try and it'll fit the horse correctly whereas buying off a private person it might not fit, even if I was able to try it and take it back if it was no good it's the time spent faffing around.

a friend sold an albion k3 , less than 2 years old as new on ebay, it only reached 420.

i put my kieffer on there and it got to i think 245, im just not willing to let over 1k of saddle that is 2.5 years old go for that crazy money.

deffinatly a drop in the market. tbh with what they cost to replace id rather need the cash and hanf on to the saddle as the good makes last for years.

Perhaps time of year with xmas and recession too. I am loosely looking for another horse and the adverts have dropped by a third(as far as I can tell). So no new horse no new saddle (or used).

It's hard from a buyers perspective to buy second hand privately as there is no guarantee it will fit where as with second hand from a saddler although you pay more they can come and fit it for you so there's time saved in not doing multiple fittings and money saved in not having to sell on the ones that didn't fit (maybe at a loss).

I'm hoping that when I finally find my new neddy that one of the saddles that i've got already will be a decent fit but if not it's likely to be off to the saddler for me.

I actually prefer second hand as somebody else has done the breaking in bit - and before anybody jumps on me for saying that yes even when I've had a new Albion it's still taken a while to break in!

Personally I'd be more than happy to put the full value of the saddle as a deposit to be able to try it on the horse before buying with an agreed timescale of a few days / a week in which it had to be returned in the same condition if not suitable, maybe even with a few quid taken out of the deposit to cover for the time i'd had it & somebody else couldn't be trying it (a timewaster tax!).

As a seller I'd feel safe knowing that I had the cash in hand and as a buyer that i'd got what was needed.

All of the second hand ones for sale that i've seen though are advertised for instant buy only.

Hey maybe I'll set up a new business :D

They just don't seem to be shifting. I have a Stubben Siegfried VSD in mint condition for sale. I paid £1300 for it, and they seem to be selling for a fraction of this:eek:

If you buy a saddle unseen or off ebay, the price has to be at a level that you would be willing to lose if it didnt fit. For me that would be about £200. Max. I`d rather pay £1000, and have it fitted, and know its not lost money.

Youd be better giving them to a saddle fitter and paying their commission.

LIke the other post says I think the massive proliferation of synthetic saddles has shifted the market significantly. Buyers want to pay less and less for used saddles as they can pick up a used good condition synthetic for £100 or so, saddlers can't make money on used saddles at those levels - stock costs a LOT to keep especially if it is purchased and not on a sale or return basis. I have never fitted synthetic saddles but I've heard that many fitters/retailers will no longer go out and fit synthetics - the call our would need to be so high to make up their income on such a low value sale that it's just not in their interest. And I'm not talking about making lots of money - just a living!

And of course those selling their saddles still want the old prices for them, understandable - but synthetics and the recession have killed trade. As there are probably fewer horses selling as well, this will affect it - just like houses not selling affects the DIY stores.

As above, plus so many saddles have been so adjusted now, it's almost impossible to predict what you're getting unless you're going with a high end latex saddle. Not that long ago people were relatively happy to buy a fairly generic good quality saddle but now the fashion is to get one 'customised' even if that means starting with a synthetic.

Agree with sbloom, I think the new generation of synthetics has a lot do with it.

My wintec sold within 24 hours recently, but I can't seem to sell my leather saddle for love nor money, despite it being in better condition. Not like I want silly money for it (under £200), it's been on ebay but reached £54 :( Just hoping I can manage to sell it once Christmas is out the way...
