Why are some breeds cheaper than others?

Question as above really.
For horses that can read the same on paper apart from their breed, there can be massive price differentials. Why is this?
I can kind of understand it for ex-racers, but not so much for others, especially with geldings where there is no breeding opportunity.

I'd say it's probably something to do with buyer demand and what there is a glut of i.e ex-racers are numerous so therefore pretty cheap PRE's not so much

All to do with markets and demand: international showjumpers/grand prix dressage horses/derby winners are rare, so therefore expensive. Slow/untalented/untrained racehorses/ponies/hairy beasties are not rare, so they are less expensive.

I think you are misunderstanding my question - for those horses who have the SAME TALENTS on paper (IE not your super elite talented ponios), there are still big differences in prices.

I appreciate the supply / demand thing (eg ex racehorces have already done a job, and are sold off very cheaply once they are no use on the track), but I am still not entirely convinced as to why there are big differences amongst other breeds.

seller expectations/personal circumstances sometimes maybe. Also, some people may not know the market so put them on at a price too high or too low for what they are.

Also, bloodlines can make a difference to what people will pay

Fashion :). WB's are popular ATM so often more expensive
If you look you will find even same breed, same type etc vary a lot.
So some of it is based just on what the owner believes horse is worth

deffinatly a fashion thing connemaras are quite often twice as much as a welsh for example even if on paper the can/have done the exact same things

It just comes down to supply and demand - some breeds are more desirable than others, some are more common. Desirability depends partly on fashions, sometimes on how rare the breed is, where you are and what circles you move in.

Fashion and exclusivity play a big part I think, a horse from the continent with a brand is always a good one as is one hand picked from Spain. I have nothing against the people that do this but am surprised that they could find nothing in the whole of the UK to suit.

To the person above who mentioned hairy ponies - fully feathered gypsy cobs sell for good money, especially the little ones, individual talents aside they make better money than most in fact

The lovely New Forest pony is arguably as potentially talented as the Connie but doesnt command the same price

Shhhhhhh............people don't need to know that.;)

There are also breeds like Haflingers where there is a 2 tier system in effect - the Gb reg ones are v strictly controlled by the mother stud book in austria and in inspections and breeding purity but there are 000s of driving types imported from the continent where a percentage of other breeds can be in there and still passported as a Haflingers, and these are sold cheaply - in Austria the majority of these would go for meat.

I have a welshie and a standardbred, both similar height, age, ability etc, although my SB is far better mannered when out at shows etc; my Welshie can be strong and take off with me, or try to duck out of jumps at the last minute, whereas my SB is a good as gold and will try his hardest to please. If I was thinking if selling them however, I think I would get less for my SB because he is a less popular breed. Madness!

Supply and demand as they say.

What is as common as flies on a muck heap here (Quarter Horses, Paints, most gaited breeds) are not readily available in the UK and vice versa.

I could fly over a consignment of flotsam and jetsam papered Quarter horses and Paints (overos not tobianos) which I would pick up at $100-500 here, and sell them in the UK for silly money. Ditto a shipment of ready to ride, papered Pasos, I can pick those up at US sales for $300 a piece.

I would then fly a consignment of bog standard coloured cobby things from any sale ring and sell them for silly $ here. The 'Gypsy Vanners/Traditional Cobs/Tinkers Cobs' whatever fancy handle they like to use are, on the whole, awful examples of horses let alone coloured cobs.

If I were to bring back any papered British native it would be sold before it touched down.

The horses would pay their shipping costs and then some.

Why don't you?

Sounds like a plan to me.:D

You can have my NF for a start off, she's not going to do well if this weather stays like today.:(
