I know it's winter and the markets rubbish, but searching for a horse for my friends daughter is proving to be a nightmare. She had a lovely 24 year old mare that had an accident jumping so is now retired. All she wants is a nice safe teenagers pony that will jump, hack and do a bit of dressage. Something betwen 14.3hh and 16hh and something up to 15 so she can insure it before it's a veteran to minimise exclusions. She has £3,500 for the horse and woudl like it to be around Kent. So far the one she liked was unsound and woudln't ever be able to jump, was literally a happy hacker, and the others she liked in ads, and has been assured by the seller will be fine for her teenage daughter, have sent her poor child into orbit with bucking and spinning. Looking on horse and hound, pony club, horsequest, horsemart, preloved, facebook, tack shop notice boards and have a few dealers keeping their eyes out - where else can we look?

She's looking for what everyone wants and has heavily limited how far she wants to travel. That's always going to cause problems.

There is a really nice 16hh red and white by me just to fit that description but is in Gloucestershire! If she can travel there will be many more available- there are several round here because of hartpury college- lots of teens selling up before uni or jobs

It's the travelling a few hours to find the horse isn't as described that's putting her off. I've never really done the whole searching for a horse thing before as the right horse has always come along at the right time for me luckily, so unsure if we're missing somewhere to look?

There seemed to be several on horsemart that were right area, right price, right age. You don't say what level she wants to work to so difficult to say on that.

Doesn't need to be a world beater. Something that's safe (as safe as horses can be really), will pop round a course, and will be happy to go to the school equestrian teams training and comps. Really a laid back sort that mum can hack during the week to keep pony fit without fearing for her life!

What height does she want to jump? Does she want something that is a really reliable showjumper who rarely has a pole or a stop, or is she happy to have something less competitive. Does she want it to do cross country too? Does she just want to do Prelim dressage, or would she hope to do a bit more?

There is no shortage of teenage all-rounders for sale in your area at the moment, but to find one that is really safe and in that price bracket will be the problem.

Takes time to find a horse like that, I was very lucky to find my boy at end of summer (with help from my RI) after looking for months. He is 15hh, 9 (8 when I got him), great stable manners, lovely jump, need more schooling on the flat, great on the road etc. have had some issues but generally he is a really nice all rounder. I am only going to start competing in a few months low level stuff, so he is perfect for me. He would not have been right for someone who wanted an all rounder but wanted to compete at a much higher level.

Don't give up hope, she will find the right horse for her, just takes time but can be frustrating. Best of luck with the search!

I have a friend with one for sale near me - buckingham/ bicester. £3K.Hasnt been advertised as they know they will sell word of mouth.. If you pm me i will find out more details. Chest gelding. I think about 15.1hh. Hunted, will jump a gate. Pony clubbed. Show jumped. Good hack.

There's a horse advertised for sale at the moment on Kent equestrian grapevine on Facebook, looks a nice sort - chunky type, 15hh, 11 year old, strawberry roan gelding. Horse looks to be a solid all rounder, got experience in various disciplines. Owner only selling after 6 years because she wants to jump bigger tracks, isn't in a rush to sell .2200ono might be worth a look.

Just a low level all rounder - able to go around a 2'9 course after some time together, more like 2'3, possibly 2'6 to begin with, unaffiliated level really. Wouldn't want to do more than prelim dressage. She doesn't want anything majorly competitive, more something to have fun on that she can let her daughter go and ride in teh school without fearing for hr life! Her daughter is 13 so obviously at a stage where in a couple of years she doesn't know if it will be horses or boys so then she will be hacking it more! We have miles of TROT rides so doesn't need to touch a road really - A Welsh D or Connemara type would be perfect. Would prefer something that isn't too fine as would be living out all year with shelter and adaquately rugged. Would like something that isn't dead to the leg either, but has brakes. Her daughters described her ideal horse as a smaller version of mine... He's an IDx so something of that sort of build!

There's a good dealer not too far from Kent that has the sort they are looking for, connies mainly, but they might need to stretch the budget a little

Could you PM the name? They have been to a dealers and can stretch the budget a bit, but the hose thy fell in love with at a very reputable dealers turned out to be unsound and unable to jump when vetted...

They're about you just need to be quick to buy them!
Snapped one up from a dealer a couple months back for a bargain price of 2,500-but we did compromise as she's rising 5 and needs more schooling.
