I rode out my friends new horse today. It was his 2nd time out hacking on his own. He was great yesterday. Today he was really spooky and decided twice to buck about 5 times each. The last time he did it we'd just crossed a junction on the way home. I dread to think what would've happened had some traffic been passing. They were big bucks too. The horse is supposed to be good out hacking on his own.

Ive also had a horse that wasnt suited to me and subsequently sold. Why is so hard to find a nice safe hack.

Because horses are NOT machines. I have a mare that was advertised as a safe and steady hack and she was dreadful the first month or so because she was in a new environment. She is now, however, everything the original owners said she was. Each horse is different and some need a bit longer than others. Sometimes a bit of slack is a wise move and the whole picture is not often seen immediately. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but if it was of vital importance the horse hacked alone I would have tried it several times before I bought.

Bit early yet to be saying he is not as stated...horse has had alot of change, could be on different feed etc. Give him a chance

Ditto this ^^

I was so worried that Hugo wasn't as advertised, I was ready to sell him! Thank goodness I didn't!! It took a long time (probably nearly 6 months) before he started to settle into his new home and become the lovely boy he is now. It has taken quite a lot of work AND a great deal of patience! But he is now genuinely exactly what was advertised last December!! :D

Thats good. Hes not mine. Hes a friends horse.

only time will tell if she was lied to or not. as others have said it may take him a while to settle altho bucking on roads sounds more like discomfort than insecurity. does he have a different saddle?

If it is insecurity get him some magnesium oxide. I fed my lad this when I first had him as he was skitty, nappy and threatening to rear if I put him under the slightest pressure. However within a week on it he was much happier. hasn't had it in over a year and is a saint now

But your right often sellers do lie !!

Some sellers arent honest as they are desperate to offload their problem horses but as others have said it is early days yet with your friends new horse.

Could just be getting used to a new home and his new owners way of riding. I wouldn't write him off just yet. Good point about discomfort too, particuarly if he has a different saddle or even different numnah/girth.

I don't necessarily think that lots of sellers lie. I think that horses go very differerantly for differant people.

If she had the horse, knew him and trusted him chances are he was a saint on the roads.

If new rider is wary the horse picks up on it and is also wary and can misbehave. They take a massive lead from you the rider.

Give him time and let them build up some trust together and he may turn out to be everything she described.
