walk back into the field and attach his teeth to a new mare's bum and hang on to her for a few moments, then walk away to the water trough as if nothing happened?? this new mare is, well, lets say, overtly flirty and squirty. she's been with us 2 weeks. yesterday she was standing along the gate when i went to put my boy back in, and she wouldnt shift when i opened the gate. when i gave her butt a gentle push, she almost squirted all over me. ew ew ew ew ew!!! our donkey spends almost his entire day standing with his nose up her tail. anyway, why would my pony do that? he is number rank in the herd, and she is middleish. she didnt move away from him when he did it, jst squirted again.

A gelding that used to mount my mare always did this, i think its a dominance over mares type thing, he never did it to her when she wasnt in season ;)

Sounds like the mare is in season. Your pony must have been incredibly restrained to restrict himself to merely hanging onto her rug. One of mine would have been on top of her in a flash despite being a gelding with a crooked foreleg.

Its a pre mating dominance thing. He might go on to mount her in a day or so - or not. She is clearly very much in season!
