OMG! I posted on Friday asking what price people would put on my second hand rugs - 5 are Rambo/Rhino and the rest are weatherbeeta/masta etc. There were 15 in total.
I had a girl from Dorset wanting to buy them. She'd seen my ad on Gumtree. She would only text. I tried phoning her but she wouldn't answer. This was on Friday. I started to wonder if she was genuine as she was sending weird texts. She sounded quite odd, but I put it down to her maybe being young. People on here said that she should expect to pay at least £250 for the bundle I was offering, but I agreed to £200. Then she kept asking if I had any rubber riding boots I would chuck into the deal; I said no, so she asked if I had a head collar... I said no. I asked if she would like my girths and numnahs that I need to get rid of and she said her horse can't be ridden so no! She asked me for photos of the rugs so I asked her for an email address as it costs £1.50 per MMS on my phone; she said she doesn't have an email address, so I refused to send photos, on the basis of it being too expensive. She still wouldn't answer her phone but kept saying she was trying to see if her bank would let her take £200 out but the earliest she could do was Tuesday, and I said after work on Tuesday was fine and I would meet her just off the M5 with the rugs (I did not want to give her an address as I still didn't believe she was genuine). We arranged 5pm Tuesday, although I had said to her that the weekend would be better due to work (my husband works til 430 and I didn't want to meet her on my own). Late on Friday, we had sealed the arrangement to meet at 5pm on Tuesday at a busy meeting place just off the M5.
I heard nothing all day yesterday but I went back to my in-laws' farm and packed all the rugs, made sure they were nice and tidy for her. My husband and I turn our phones off after a certain time, especially at weekends, because both of us can be in demand from one person or another - usually his boss! Both phones were turned off and put on charge at about 8pm yesterday. I woke up this morning to about 20 text messages on my phone and a similar amount on my husband's phone, from this girl, plus a few from a different number asking if we had rugs for sale which I presume was her attempt to see if we were ignoring her. At 730am I replied to her saying that we had our phones switched off and were enjoying our Saturday evening so were unable to respond to her texts last night. The texts were her wanting to come first thing this morning to get the rugs instead... and she sent these messages between 830pm and midnight yesterday! I told her that we had both agreed to do some jobs for someone today, so I was not sure what time I would be able to do as I had not expected to have to rearrange my weekend at the last minute when we had arranged Tuesday night at her convenience not mine! This was the truth - my husband was fitting doors for someone. I got some pathetic texts back from her telling me I am a timewaster, she thinks I don't want to sell my rugs because I have a rug fetish etc. She was getting more and more verbally abusive because I was taking longer than nano-seconds to answer her barrage of texts, so I told her I would rather give them to a charity than sell them to her. Then she sent me a picture of the cash and said 'don't you wish you could smell it?' She started telling me I am making her elderly horse suffer because I am not allowing her to buy my rugs. I told her I am sticking them on ebay and if she wants to bid on them then she is welcome to, but they will be going for more on there!
My husband just got back and she sent equally obnoxious texts to him, all the while unwilling to answer her phone. Gumtree is known for inviting scam-artists, and I just wonder if she is one of them, as the tone of her messages made her sound very young due to the broken English.
I have 129 texts in my inbox and only a few are from people other than her! All of them are her getting more and more desperate. Maybe I was wrong to not have my phone on last night, but I was not expecting her to want to come this morning when we had made arrangements for Tuesday evening! I did reply to her first thing this morning and she just went mental at me!
She was getting a good deal as well - the horseware rugs were probably worth about 180 on their own, without the other 10 or so rugs! And they are 6ft so a popular size! Why do I get all the weirdos!?
