There seems to quite a lot lately that have gone missing, why do people steal them and for what? Even being freeze marked or microchipped doesn't seem to deter theft.
It does seem strange, especially when people can't even give them away sometimes at the moment. Perhaps people steal to order? That way, the thief knows the money is waiting, and someone unwittingly buys a stolen horse. I also can't understand why people steal dogs, but it happens.
I agree. Usually the majority you see going round Facebook are 'missing on loan' types, but I have seen a few recently that have just vanished from fields, one of which was freeze marked.
Very worrying indeed.
I'm guessing people make money by selling them.
Is there a central database for all these 'missing' horses?
I suppose there's always a market for good horses and that would explain the stolen on loan situations - they 'loan' decent horses as they know they can flog them. However, really the owner needs to have fully checked out the person they loan to and arrange regular check ups so they can keep track.
Those stolen from fields/stables always seems quite strange though and I do wonder how many actually turn out to have escaped as opposed to actually have been stolen? There was that one recently that they found in a 2 weeks later in a ditch but they had mistakenly thought it had been stolen. Glad that had a happy ending.
My worry is horses are stolen to be taken to slaughter to make a quick buck to be honest. I don't know if that's me just thinking the worst but I am not convinced by checks that are done at UK slaughterhouses or indeed checks at ferry ports if horses were shipped for slaughter abroad. I do hope that's more my imagination running wild with me though.
