Someone I know brought an unvetted ex-racer! When they got the horse home and rode it found it had an injury from the race track. They are now trying to sell the poor thing on (he is rideable now). However, they have put a time limit on how long they will have him on the market for before they will pts. :(

What has the poor fella done, vet has given him the all clear now. I really wish I could retrain a racer and take him :(

sounds very very mean to me, they bought the horse obviously not give it a chance and putting it back up for sale, and saying if it wont sell there having it pts what the hell, the horse has done nothing to deserve this, it should sell if they have it the right price and be truthful about the horse there are some quite evil people out there.
 
I am starting to think he is pushing for me to take him on, I just don't know a lot about ex racers. However, I have learnt how to deal with TB's and how to be patient with their quirks lol

If its got an old injury from the race track how would you be able to make a difference? Not sure I understand. :)

Because they don't want the horse anymore, they don't have the patience to retrain an ex racer and because they cant just get on with it they don't want to know! as a result they have put him on the market and if he doesnt sell in a certain length of time then he will be pts! :(
 
:( Poor boy, I really hope he finds a loving home, fast!

I do wonder why people ever become horse owners if they don't have a care in the world for their welfare. :(

They retrain racehorses and are in Wantage, I wouldn't have thought they would want to hear of him being pts. People make me so mad, they take on these horses and really don't know what they are doing. I would have him myself but have 3 already and my TB mare (who was to be pts because she was allegedly so dangerous until I rscued her) has just started her re-schooling, believe me it has been and is a long progress, I have had her nearly 16 months and we have just started to lunge.

I wouldnt bother. I had a 4yr old ex racer I bought to retrain, my circumstances changed and he was only suitable as a hack because he developed a few soundness issues about 6 months after I got him. Had vet and back lady, inconclusive, and i couldnt afford thousands of pounds just for a diagnosis. I rung HEROES about taking him on, the very unhelpful lady said there was a 3 yr waiting list and the best thing I could do was have him PTS.
Luckily I found him a nice hacking home locally.

I agree with you on that and from what i've heard you have to give a rather large donation too.

My thoughts exactly.

Too many people buy horses as some sort of fashion accessory, and when the shine wears off and the hard work starts, they are not interested.

Given the state of the current market, they will practically have to give the horse away, untrained ex-racers are ten a penny (almost literally).

Makes me mad :mad:
 
Chellebean, believe in yourself and take him on. TB's are very quick learners and are lovely. They arent all nutters as people would believe.

My TB off the track ex racer was vetted and passed. Got her home, had to have ultrasound on fetlock, a month later and £800 (long story) she was then sound. Then came in from field fracture lame saturday. Vet called immediately, found it was a blood clot in vein on inside hind leg. After several injections and plenty of walking to stimulate circulation is now absolutely fine. *touches wood*

I took on an exracer knowing that they will have been worked hard and would probably cost me lots of vets fees! But I love her to bits and she moves fantastically. I would never sell her on just because of an injury.

That person has made me so bloody cross. There are so many irresponsible people who see horses as some sort of icon or quick way to make money. Angry and cross :(
