Ive just seen an ad on preloved for a mare on my yard (in my care because owner is terrified to go near her) advertised as very placid, wonderfull temperment, great to hack out blah blah blah when in fact shes very fiesty and only bin broken in for two wks, the first of which she spent rearing verticaly, bucking and slamming my friends fearless daughter into the fence, they also lied and said she was insured which now turns out she isnt so friend now wont allow her daughter to get on her so is out of work. Trouble is lying owner/seller (who I may add is getting free full livery/breaking service and expecting us to show potential buyers the horse) is my mother in law so what would you do?
 
MIL situation makes the whole thing worse!! Its a tricky one! Perhaps a quiet word?! Did you know she was planning on selling the horse when you took it on?
 
I don't think it's tricky at all. It's quite simple, you tell MIL the advert is incorrectly describing the horse. The horse that you are selling on her behalf. The horse that you will get pulled up on should something untoward happen.

I sell horses for other people and if they are putting the advert up for these horses they always run them by me to make sure they haven't missed something out and that they've described the horse accurately. I will not put my name to selling a horse if it is not what it says on the tin. It's your reputation that is at stake here.
 
The fact that the horse belongs to your MIL is not really that relevant, if you are handling the sale you need to do all of it including a properly worded advert otherwise you are wasting your time and if you are running a yard you risk your reputation or worse.
I would either arrange to do a decent job on the horse so it can be sold genuinely or turn it out and leave it until she sees sense and allows you to do so.
 
I guess I just meant that sometimes dealing with family can be tricker than dealing with a client! :) I know my MIL can be a little explosive and it makes it hard for me and my OH!
 
Id print ad off bring it over and say something like " this looks exactly like you mare, but its described as placid etc etc, when in fact yours isn't is she etc etc. funny how identical they look , but polar opposite behavior so cannot be"

Anyone with sense will turn up and see the horse is far from described and run a mile off ... unless she plans on doping it up ?
 
She sent the horse to me to break for her after a breaking yard aparently couldnt do it after having her for 4wks (but thats another story) she bought horse agaist my advice and couldnt handle it as she is a complete novice! stupid woman! Anyway it was mad and I didnt have the guts to get on it after jst having a baby so my friend and her daughter did it and she will never be a novice horse shes fiesty by nature so MIL wants to sell, I wrote her an add she decided not to use it! I really dont get on with her! She ignores my advice because 28yrs experience is nothing on her 6mnth experience!
 
Rearing, bucking and flipping out the first week under saddle - are you sure you should be selling this horse at all? I'd be terrified to show a potential purchaser a youngster likely to throw those kind of antics
 
I can see that you're kinda stuck between a rock & a hard place!

But you should at least have a quiet word.. Maybe ask how she expects you to show people the horse, when it doesn't yet behave itself. Tell her it needs more work, but explain that nobody wants to break an uninsured horse, well-behaved or not.

If she doesn't take the hint, get a little firmer. You can't let her put people at risk & walk all over your reputation because she's your MIL. Maybe have a word with your OH too & get some backup.

That good old saying...... A little knowledge is dangerous! I'd probably be telling her that if the advert isn't changed I wouldn't be continuing working with horse or selling on her behalf!

Oh gosh, I totally agree!
Ouch OP I don't really envy you however as your the one selling and showing you have to say something to protect your reputation as well as the health of potential riders/buyers.
