we were driving through the new forest today as we often do due our work and we came across 2 dead new forest pony's on the side of the road, sadley it is a regular sight,it just pee's me off,i was going to put the pics on here of the 2 ponies as a shock tactic to let people know what happens on a regular basis but im sure you all know and would not want to see the pics of the ponies, there are signs around those particular places as well saying animals on road day and night,so why do they still drive stupidly i cant see the horse being on a suicide mission and threw itself under the car !!!!

i know they can step out into the road but if you are driving at the stated speed limit you could miss them !!!they were also both on places where you could have seen them easily, not round a corner !!!!!

Thats awful i think people are just so stupid that they don't expect them to step out same as some drivers when you are out hacking that go speeding past and don't seem to realise that your horse could jump out in front of them at any minute

do they just leave them to die on the side of the road?!?!

Sadly some heartless barstewards do just that in hit and runs.

If the driver responsible did not report it to the police, what is most likely to happen is that someone else with a conscience will, then the police will call the Agister (responsible for the stock on the forest) and they will humanely despatch the animal and contact the owner of the animal. If it is an injured animal they will contact the owner to take it back (off the open forest) until it is recovered and fit to turn out again.

Then the hunt kennels come out to collect the fallen stock.

I would just say that sometimes you can't see them until it is too late, but I do agree that the majority of accidents are completely unneccessary and caused by the drivers going too fast. The reflective neck collars have helped, but if they have their backside facing you, you may not see them until it is too late.

god I am shocked that people actually hit a pony and then just drive off knowing that they probably have hurt it quite badly! What is wrong with people? !!!

A friend of mine keeps horses, donkeys and cattle in the NF. A couple of weeks ago one of her donkey foals was hit and killed, and they know it was a local, as I believe it often is.
Why the hell can't people just kill their speed?

I live in the NF and it disgusts and terrifies me at the speed of some drivers and their total disregard for live stock.

The speed limit in my area has been reduced to 30mph but as you can imagine, that makes no difference to the people racing to work, trying to save those extra precious seconds to be spent round the coffee machine!
