Like most of the country we had snow on Friday. They said we would only get 10cm but we had atleast an inch poss alittle more. Luckly for me I keep my ponies where I live so I had no trouble Getting to my boys. But I look after two ponies in a nearby village as there owners live in london most of the time. The other lodger also keeps afew of her horses elsewhere.
It is currently to dangorous to cycle across the forest and on Friday the roads were to bad to get around.
So the other lodger and I walked for 1 hour to get to her horses, Then 2 hours from her horses to the ones I look after and 1 hour home. Most of the time we were walking in blizzard like conditions wich is why we went together as we thought it would be safer in twos.
And yesterday I needed to go and do the horses I look after so I walked for 2 hours again to get to them as it's still to dangorous to cycle. I'll probably have to walk again today.
To me this is a perfectly normal thing to do. The horses need doing and it's the only way to get there but alot of people I know (even horsey people) think i'm mad :o
Anyway here are some pics of my dogs in the snow. :D

They enjoyed the long walks in the snow. ;) :p :D :D

LOL. :p I'm rubbish at mesurments can you tell :p We deff had more than we were supposed to anyway  (I think I was thinking of feet theres 12 cms in a foot right  ) The poor little fella dissapeared afew times. We could only see the tip of his tail.
Glad someother people do the same. If the horses need doing they need doing. They can't just be left in this weather. :(

hmmm..I think we ought to stick to hands for measuring your snow..1 hand is 4 inches. 1 inch is a quarter of a hand. 1 foot is 12 inches so that would be 3 hands..I'll leave cms out for the mo!;) Not mad, just responsible and a lovely way to spend your snow days. I agree tho, make sure you take supplies and a fully charged phone:-)

Not mad at all, i walked a 6 1/2 mile round trip to see my girl on sunday.. my legs were totally dead by the time i got home :( id rather walk than risk driving (only have a fiesta which isnt exactly great in snow) :)

I keep my horses at home but OH was out yesterday in what he described as a blizzard (up in Scotland) walking to check on his mares and youngsters who are kept in a field near the outskirts of the neighbouring village. I was on the phone to him for part of his walk and it sounded horrendous, he ended up having to go because he was worried he was going to drop his phone in all the snow! Not mad at all, needs must and all that.

No you're not mad Laura but there are plenty that would find an excuse to not do it sadly.
There is no more beautiful place to walk for a few hours a day than our beloved New Forest, I still miss my home terribly :o
I LOVE your dogs, especially the little one. I prefer the smaller varieties of both canine and equine ;)

Thanks everyone. I'm glad it's not just me. With everyone saying I was mad I was having visions of horses being left un attended. Mind you all the people saying i'm mad keep there horses on livery. The poor stable staff have to battle through the snow to do there horses instead of them

SaharaS hands is the only mesurement I can cope with :o But it does mean when I entre showjumping I have no idea how big the jumps are going to be ;) :p

Ellemoo deffinatly wasn't worth driving. There were lots of abandoned cars around. Some had crashed and some had just been left. Even the 4x4s were sliding all over the place

onlytheponely Thanks I love him to :D I also love things small (Hence why Herbs is only 12.2hhish :p) The forest is the most beautiful place in the world and it does look lovely under all the snow. :)

No not mad we drive the 8 miles to the ponies every day even though officially the road was closed or advised not to travel unless necessary though to me feeding and poo picking is essential. OH thinks I am bonkers for poo picking in the snow but he left it two years ago and it took months to catch up at least this way there isnt too much left when it thaws. We are both older horse owners and suffer from arthritis so couldnt do hundreds of barrows at a time three a day is about my max

I usulaay cycle too , but early dec I had an accident on my bike when I skidded on black ice, Luckily for me it was early and no car had been following me or I would not have had a chance. As it was I was covered in blood and had broken my nose a bit.

So please do not use the bike in these conditions.

I am walking too and getting some lifts- but keeping it up is tiring- although I am much older than you. Can you get anyone to help you- doing it for one day is ok but this weather may carry on for a while.

A few years ago, mee and my friend walked through knee deep snow (drifts were higher than us!) just to check our horses and throw some more hay over the fence, even though they had plenty. Then just turned round and went home. Took us six hours lol. Our other halves thought we were plain daft, but we didnt think twice, wrapped up warm, stocked up on chocolate and off we went :D

Was quite glad when the ploughs came out and made the journey a bit easier though, its a lot harder walking any distance in snow! Il have to try and dig out the photos

ARE YOU MAD ??? :D:D:D
Nope youre not, id have done the same to make sure mine were fine if id had to. I have in the past driven down main roads that were closed in my 4x4 getting by stranded cars etc to get to mine when they were further away then after managing to drive down to the stables, having to dig a half circle out behind the car to let me turn and go back out the tracks id made coming in.
If i had to id walk but as others said with a fully charged phone and dressed for the weather :D

windand rain My OH thinks i'm mad for poopicking to but i'm abit obcessive about it. :o

The Boy He's a pure bred German Shepherd :D

teasle Hope your ok now. Sounds like a horrid axcedent. I normaly cycle on the treated roads and get off and push if i'm atall worried. (seeing as i'm paranoid thats most of the time :o )

Holzdweaver I'm glad our snow wasn't that deep. Was hardenough walking through what we had and don't think I'd have ever seen the little fella again had it been knee deep

Marydoll Don't forget the choc ;). We had chocchip digestives and choc drops for the dogs :D

Mad but lovely and yes I would have done the same in your shoes :D

I'd also be very grateful if you were looking after my horses for me too!

Two winters ago my sister walked through snow a good 3 hands deep for 1.5 miles each way to her diy yard. Took her hours every day, and she works full time. The rura roads were impassable for weeks.

I would have done the same, they need doing - end of!
Think I would have risked driving though or begged for a lift! Lol! Not sure I would have fancied all that walking!

Nope you're not mad, when my stupid back heals this is how I'll be getting to my horses, it'll probably take me about a 2 hour round trip too but at least the dog will get a decent walk out of it too :D
2 birds 1 stone ;)

No your not mad. I have a 4 x 4 shotgun but for fun we (as in me and my hubby) decided to walk only 4 miles up the mountain to see my girl then back. I have to say my bum and legs were aching at the end. I was told I was mad and to be fair I think I was.

BUT i think i'll be doing again tomorrow and were heading for a heavy down pour all night and tomorrow. You only live once and I think its good to have fun, silly or happy memories....

Holzdweaver I'm glad our snow wasn't that deep. Was hard enough walking through what we had and don't think I'd have ever seen the little fella again had it been knee deep

It was quite funny at one point as it had drifted to the top of a gate so i tactfully climbed to the top of the gate and crawled on my hands and knees till i got back to the shallower stufff. My friend didnt, she jumped off the top of the gate and ended up waist deep! I couldnt stop laughing, it was the look of 'what just happened' which had me nearly on the floor! :D

I had to walk a round trip of 12 miles to get to my horses as roads were dreadful and my car is out of action due to a broken suspension spring!

Weve walked before we had the 4x4. It was 6 miles each way to one place. Horses had hay as the farmer delivered it but our car was going nowhere, so we walked.

Its great that your walking all that way to do the horses. Not mad at all!

Not mad in the slightest. I couldn't get my car out on Friday afternoon so after collecting my 9 year old son from school we walked the 6 miles to the yard.

It was quite pleasant and even though I was whacked he enjoyed himself. It's part of my job to fetch in and I felt awful not going up to do it.
