Why do some drivers have no respect for horses?

First of all I'm extremely greatful of those who slow down to let me pass, as everybody else is. If I could I stop, get off my horse and give them cookies or something to say thanks then I would. Any way...

Was out on a hack tonight and a white BMW (couldn't get the reg to report him) decided to speed around the corner at about 40mph (on country lanes where there are plenty of yards around!!). I signalled for him to slow down, he ignored me and continued to speed at us. My mare panicked and put her head into the bush as if to say I don't wanna watch this. My poor girl was shaking. He drove up the verge, through the bushes continuing at the speed and started beeping his horn?! It was all pretty much a blur.

The girl I was out with said that for the past week its happened to her every day. The road isn't particularly busy, but when cars do come it's a different story.

Is there any way to slow these inconsiderate aholes down?! Can we inform the police that the area is becoming increasingly dangerous? Will they take any interest? Or will they wait until an accident happens?

Have you tried the Polite range of hi viz stuff? I've found it really effective in getting drivers to slow down when they see us. :) x

There are some reflective vests available online that say kill you speed not my horse on them, if you try that it MIGHT work?? any way i've had them same trouble when i was trying out my new pony. hope this helps

It might be worth talking to the police try and get a group of you involved and record incidents of it's best to get registration numbers but the one really dangerous incident I was in I was to busy coping with it to take the number but if you keep record for a month date time what happened and but them together the police might well take an interest.
Good luck stay safe.

it always amazes me the stupidity of people who drive like that, we have a lady round here who has a massive horse box and will near enough plow u off the road to get past.....i've also had someone speed up towards me and they were so close my foot hit their mirror :O

i'm going to be investing in the polite reflective range shortly!!

I past a yard once that had LARGE signs positioned so passing drivers could see that I thought may get the message home!

It is extremely hard trying to take a registration number whilst your horse is having a fit in the middle of the road and they're speeding off into the distance :( :P

I will deffinitly do that! The girl I was riding out with, someone in her family is part of the police force who deals with things like that so she's getting advice off them to find out what to do.

Going to look into getting a personalised hi-viz coat/tabbard with something along the lines of "we don't dent, we die" / "i'm not airing my armpits... SLOW DOWN" / "Moody mare" on!

Oh, WOW! Our yard isn't on the offending road. The fields back onto it though! I don't think we're allowed to put up a sign, otherwise I think we'd have a massive billboard!

I think making a board up or a banner would help.

Could the council give permission for something like this? It may be worth picking up phone to local BHS Welfare Officer and see if you can get something organised. I may do the same as I ride on busy town roads.

Like the idea.

Graphic yet real.

Well, my friend & I are currently thinking of who to call to see about this! How do you find out who your local BHS welfare officer is?

Contact the BHS, they will be able to advise:

Safety (including reporting horse incidents) 02476 840516

They might well be able to get their local Riding & Road Safety officer along to meet you, worth asking :)
