Why do some people bother having dogs?

Took the boys to a lovely place this morning for some training first thing, had a lovely time was out for a couple of hours in all , only another chap training a lab and a runner with a collie so no distraction - nice this was the 6am - 8am "slot" I got back to the car and I like to sit out and enjoy the view with a flask of coffee and a pastry I had packed ..the car park started getting busy with more dog walkers, in the 30 mins I was there a dozen people turned up, let dogs loose from the cars and then straight on their phones...off up the track paying zero attention to their dogs...I just find it odd..and funny when one guy fell over the sleepers that stop people driving onto the fields as his face was so firmly glued to his phone, I'm pretty sure he heard me laugh as he stacked it!!

It does seem weired to me this glued to phone whilst walking dog thing. I used mine a couple of days ago to listen to some music whilst walking, but it was a playlist and phone was in my pocket leaving me free to enjoy the scenery. Almost got it out yesterday in an unfamiliar place to look for footpaths off the canal tow path I was on, but luckily didn't as would have missed my dog about to wolf down a discarded poo bag🤮

There are 2 dogs along my street that you hardly ever see out. Both with families very capable of walking them. I feel for the dogs as one is a little terrier x whippet, about 5 years old now (they got him as a pup because Sharpeis were too expensive!!) and the other is a spaniel x terrier, about 3 years that they got from a rescue centre as a pup. They are both understandably quite vocal.

I live on the edge of a green which is popular for dog walking, so I see a lot from my kitchen window. When I go out with my dog, it's not uncommon for owners not to even see me stood at my door while their dog charges over. I've even had dogs run into my house before while the owner is oblivious, on their phone! Current dog is a reactive German Shepherd so it's like running the gauntlet every time we leave the house. Even worse is next door, who have a dog, that never goes out. They've literally got to open their front door and they would be on a dog walk!

I am reminded that my favourite time of day is getting back in the car after a good walk or training session, you can hear the dogs settling in the back and having a big drink, and morning-you had the forethought to make a cup of coffee in the thermal mug that is now just ready to drink.

I don’t set too much store by never seeing certain dogs out though, my neighbours would tell you that I never walk mine.

It makes me really sad. There is a spaniel I often see being walked. Its owner is glued to her phone with headphones on and the poor dog is desperate for her attention but she just walks on, ignoring it. I love my walks; they are my time with my dog. We do some training, we play, we have fun.

I chat to mine. Mitch likes to run up to lean on me several times during a walk, just to let me know he’s having a lovely time, it’s very sweet. Years ago, I used to walk with music plugged in, but I wouldn’t dream of that now, I like to hear birds and other walkers approaching.

Well at least those dogs are getting out, I sadly know a few owners who very rarely take their dogs for a walk, I often wonder why they have one.

Next door, have an aggressive chihuahua and a lovely little terrier. They don't walk them. Apparently, they took them for a walk once, and the dogs got so tired they had to bring them home. They bark day and night, fight with each other, and howl when left. They have the most miserable life, and it's heartbreaking to see and hear!

I interact with my dog a lot on walks, we do a lot of recalls, heeling, etc. Don't like headphones as I like to know what's about me but I do play music. I did watch a few series on my phone during the longer main walks during lockdowns because I was bored stupid :p but the boys were older and always on leash so they weren't up to anything awful while I wasn't looking.

I’m not particularly a fan of walking (i acquired my dog, it wasn’t a choice) but seeing how happy he is to be out is a real joy to me, therefore i love being out with him.

I know a few people with ‘house dogs’ which I think is the most ridiculous concept ever. What it translates to is they are too lazy to take their dogs out!

No music for me either. I'm chatting to Daisy, listening to nature and enjoying my surroundings.

I concentrate completely on mine as I have 3 and don’t want anything bad to happen to them because of my inattention
Since the accident (heck, before!) I don’t like having mine out of sight. They generally aren’t and I avoid known hot spots like one time, there was a muntjac so every time they need to go a bit crazy in that spot.

She did get ridiculed (quite rightly in my opinion) for a very judgy thread she started recently. It didn’t get the reception she’d anticipated. But no idea if anyone reported it.
I assume they did, since the thread has also vanished. Didn't really seem permanent ban-worthy though....maybe once the thread got pulled Maisie decided she wanted to leave the forum...?

It was essentially an attempt at a jokey/light-hearted thread, but unfortunately it was poking fun at Universal Credit claimants.

It was in poor taste, no doubt about it, but it was essentially just a bad joke and I've certainly seen far far worse said on here in complete seriousness.

I'm no gundog person (as in know zilch about it), but I really enjoyed reading her recent posts about her spaniels, and will miss her.

It wasn't about XL bullies was it? ;) DON'T FLAME ME.

That's a shame. She can obviously train a dog and I also enjoyed her canine posts and wish she wasn't so down on herself.
