I had two horses freeze branded today. Our filly is a Westphalian and has a breed brand which must have been done hot, I was wondering why they don't do them with the freezemarking system?
Because its quicker and some would say less painful to hot brand rather than freeze brand? I'm not trying to set off an argument by the way...
I had to have my NF filly hot branded last autumn. OK, she's quiet, but she stood quietly in the crush and was branded. She started to react (like register something was happening rather than freak out) just as the brand came off. Over and done with in a few seconds...
Out of interest because I've never seen it done, how long does the freezebrand have to stay on for before it can be taken off?
Not sure how long it was on [ didn't time it ] and as she is chestnut she didn't have it on long as white will be fine.I know it is longer if you want the bare mark. Her hot brand is hardly visable and it is only because I know it is there that I can see it sometimes, she is rising 2 .
I had my mare freezebranded some years ago and I will say it must have hurt her as the irons had to be on her obviously a lot longer than they are with hot branding. She started to fidget after a bit and was obviously in discomfort but for her future safety it was worth it to me for a short period of pain. I once had verucca removed in a similar way and that did hurt after the initial very cold feeling. It felt like I was being burnt.
I have a NF and he was hot branded when he was turned out as a stallion onto the forest for identification reasons - not all NF are branded - I think they only brand them if they are turned out on the forest.
My understanding is that is it much cheaper and easier to hot brand than freeze mark. You need liquid nitrogen I believe to freeze brand and I think you have to clip the area you want to brand first (which could be tricky if you have a semi feral pony)
SO1, they clip for hot branding too. This is my forest filly immediately after she'd been branded (so "traumatised" she stuck around to be social with the humans LOL)
Re the NF ponies, it depends what the owner/breeder wants quite honestly. Some brand everything, others only brand what they are keeping on the forest, not whats going off to be sold.
I think anyone could do it. Generally the Agister will do it when the NF ponies come in on the drift, or the owner/breeder either at the drift (because there is a fire going for this purpose) or at home. So in theory I could do it, but I'd be too scared to although it looks very straightforward to do. I'd rather get someone experienced to do it who has done countless others before.
Penny your pony looks like it has two brands - PF and then the clipped area is another one? Is that because she has been sold to a different owner and the new owner has branded her as well?
Yes, she is the half sister of my younger daughters mare. The second (new) brand is my brand, the PF one is her breeders brand, breeder sold her to me in the summer.
Doesnt hot branding, create a first degree burn, therefore killing all the nerve ending in that part of the skin and creating a scar that gives you the brand?
Where as freezemarking damages/kills the hair follicles but does not damage the skin, therefore creating white hair?
First degree burns after the initial pain, do not cause pain as the nerve endings are dead so I would assume the same would happen in horses, after the initial pain, the nerves are killed very quickly.
Horses are hotbranded here because it's just easier and more convenient. As of 2010 though, all registered horses will be microchipped. The Little Cigar was hotbranded on his bottom. He wasn't thrilled, but it was only a moment of pain and it healed very quickly.
