Feeling to ruff to get horses in to feed them, so fed them on the gate and just wondered why do horses waggle legs with eating bucket food?

It's really annoying as when they are out I feed mine on the ground out of their bowls and two of them keep pawing their bowls and knowcking the food everywhere. So annoying as it's the two that need the most food who do it.

We use to have a horse that would knock his bucket over to show the donkey, once the donkey stopped eating and put his head up. The horse would eat again.

NAS does it, I get the impression from him it means..."ok I,ve got my food thanks, now you can sod of and leave me in peace lol"

when my boy does it, i have this mental image of him going "mmm, damn, this is some goooood *****...." kind of like my OH does after tucking in to a nice meal, bobbing his fork over the plate and nodding his head as he chews.... lol :)

but seriously, i was under the impression that it is just a natural foraging reaction to eating something different to grass.... not sure where i got that idea from.

I always thought it was general enthusiasm. Hobo, I love your horses, they remind me of my youngster. did you produce them? What is their breeding?

I was alwayslead to believe that because horses naturally are on the move when they eat, it is a way of recreating it. When you look at an excited horse digging/stamping at a show, it almost seems like a nervous/excitement tick.
And digging in water... what does that mean?!?!

I always thought it was stimulated by non-grass foods as they do the same action to dig up roots, etc ... Mine only do it when feed is being prepared. Never once they actually have a bucket (except for sometimes the foals!)

They are saying Please, must of been taught it in a old home :)

What a lovely idea :)

Doesn't apply to daughters youngster though who does this as he's been in same home since he was born :p

My youngster digs in water :D She loves to play in it when we got to the local ford but won't go through a puddle  Think she's a bit speshul ;)
