Just a question really

i've looked on dutch sport horse sales and the cheapest horse for sale there is 24,000 euros (nearly £19,500) and they're not proven! the most expensive was 290,000 euros (which is around 235k)

you then look at englsh importers and they're selling you dutch horses for up to £20k. and they would've paid for the importation. they dont look any where near as nice either. we get given the rejects!

 so why dont we have any of the good dutch horses??

genuine question here - and i dont think its because we cant pay that amount - because there's many people that can

heres the website - ill let you drool! :D:D

Seriously lovely horses but a fair few of them will go on to develop issues, cost is not a protection against all bad luck.
We do get lots of cheap warmbloods over here they are not all duds there are some fab reasonably prices WB's around if you have the knack of working with them.
I would love to really understand the Dutch industry how they work it all the routes the horses go down to end at the cheap end.

Ive had/seen some lovely dutch/belgium horses in the UK! We dont get all the rejects, we get what people chose to buy and import some of the horses on that site may well end up in the UK if someone here buys one!

Question, if you import them as a stallion from overseas, do they then still have to go through the same levels of testing that UK stallions do to remain a stud?

I think unless graded abroad, you must get them graded in the UK via the reliant board/society if you wish to compete affiliate and offer stud duties.

Sadly my new boy was gelded just before I got him, I would have liked him intact!

and yet I have a beautifully British bred KWPN passported youngster for sale who people don't even want to pay 4000 for in this country!! It does annoy me that people always think European is best - we have amazing youngsters in this country, as well as those competing who have been bred here but people continue to think they are second best. I do realise you mean imported horses, but there is a lot to be said for looking around at home grown ones.

same here! a strapping hanoverian; but nothing compared to those horses on there at top money with top breeding a amazing conformation that could jump grand prix

theres jst something different in those horses; but i guess - who would buy something as good as that if you werent going to jump grand prix?

do top riders buy overseas?

I'm sure they're all wonderful, but 90% of that lot would be WAAAY too sharp for the average competent rider. There is a limited market for top quality sport horses in any country, as there's not that many top quality riders to own/ride them.

BWPs are imported in my yard (plus the occasional KWPN and SF) as unbroken youngsters from good lines, and once broken and are going well are typically sold starting from £5K, increasing with the experience the horse has (unsold youngsters are all brought on as potential GP horses for the YM). I wouldn't dream of spending so much on a KWPN! 8-0

We get given the rejects??? No we don't, if you want to spend £100,000 plus for a dutch horse in this country then I can direct you to a dealer who will be very pleased to show you some & sell you one. There is a market for that value of horse but the market is limited. Even the market for the £20,000 rejects as you call them is again a limited. You've only to read posts on this forum & you'll see many will not spend more than £3.5k - £5k, so what's the point of importing £100,000 - £250,000 horses if you don't have particular buyers in mind? It's a waste of time, money & effort. There are plenty of high value horses in this country & those who are prepared to spend large amounts on them know where to go to see them, try them & buy them. Many who buy these horses won't be riding them themselves anyway, they'll be the owners but will have pro riders compete them for them.

Most dealers would tell you that if they could fill their stables with bomb proof horses that will jump a little & also do a little dressage then they would be happy to do so because they could sell those all day, every day!

All the more reason to buy a British bred horse

100% agree with that!

I don't like warmbloods much at the best of times it has to be said (and I do have one) but no way would I be off buying them from Holland when we breed perfectly nice ones here! Why on earth would the average horse owner want to import a horse from the continent. There are plenty of perfectly nice, British bred horses, that would do the job for 90% of horse owners in this country.

Do people import because it makes them seem cool or something? I've never got it!
