Why do you have a dog?

It's like asking why do you have eyelashes?
Umm cos i just do and alway have.
I couldn't live without a dog. It's the same as food/water/heat a dog is just a constant. Love them all:D

Lexie, I am sorry to hear that. Hugs.

Alec, you soppy get! :D

There are two quotes that sum it up for me:

'He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.'

And;

'He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader.'

Both make a little ready! :o

Aside from the obvious companionship and entertainment (mine provide both in bucketloads), as a dog groomer it would be really strange if I didn't have one! So my last dog I got was to be a walking billboard - yet he's one of the most amusing, entertaining, adoring characters I've ever met.

The quote from Marley and Me sums up the reason I have a dog perfectly for me:

"A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water log stick will do just fine. A dog doesn't care if your rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?"

Dogs have a different way of viewing the world. If I'm stressed about anything I just have look at my dog looking at me as if to say "you lost your favourite toy? Dont worry we can get you another!" (because this is obviously the extent of her troubles!) and I realise I'm being ridiculous and nothing is worth getting stressed or worried about! Her happy-go-lucky nature keeps me humble!

I don't feel normal without a dog. When I left home I had a good few years when I didn't have a dog until finally I did a stint in London and thought B@@@er this and changed jobs to work where I would be able to go home at lunchtime. Got a dog and then a couple of years later chucked the career nonsense and became a dog walker. Last year she died and again I examined myself closely to see if I wanted to be a wage slave again (after all it nice to have a little money etc.) but nope I felt that a) I was already in the right job and b) I needed a dog by my side. So once again I am starting again with a new dog.

So she's a companion, a friend, a cuddle addict, a doorbell, a way of life!

Just wondering....does anyone else beside me feel sorry for anyone that DOESN'T have a dog?

Depends on the reason for not having one most definitely yes if it's for practical work reasons but if it's just that they don't want one then I feel sorry that they don't "get it".

Agree! I've got two dogs, one on either side of me at hte moment. One's snoring and farting. The other is far too polite to do either of those things. But I love them both equally and would feel rather lonely without their constant affection and attention (just don't tell my hubby that - and he's definitely NOT allowed to snore and fart! LOL)

Apparently I need a dog because I have dreadful amnesia ;)

I cooked a nice roast chicken and left it out on the kitchen table. Went for a wee, and a terribly anxious little face peered round the door to let me know there was a ROAST CHICKEN (!) in the kitchen and a potentially starving dog in the house.

Just in case I had forgotten in the last 2 minutes :)

I have a dog because my children and husband wore me down nagging for one! He was bought with the strict promise that they would look after him. He is now my constant companion and I can't imagine life without him. Should have had a dog years ago...... Might not have bothered with husband and kids then :)

i always wanted a dog when i was a kid and the best i was allowed was a hamster and then a cat, both lovely but they just didn't cut it;) got my first dog when i was 21 and suffering badly from depression and panic attacks, that GSD was my reason for getting up in the morning and the one thing that made me go outside and face the world. A lot to ask of a dog perhaps but he was the most important thing in my life for a long time and he never let me down, now you can't get that from a bloke can you;):)
Since then i have never been without a dog....or 2, sometimes 3 and even 4:D:D A house isn't a home without a dog;) currently we're home to a JRT, shibu inu and bullmastiff, i like my dogs varied lol:D

I have a dog because I've always found them better company than people, but working with other people's is just not as satisfactory as having your own pooch at home.
