I have a mare permanently lame (though watch this space because at the moment she is doing relatively well!!), I bought another horse that nearly killed me so I finally sold it after 9 months, a far better horse, but still I had wanted one for life. Bought a young arab that had been backed, is beautiful, totally different to my normal (cob) type and we have been gently moving forward and she is lovely. Bank Holiday Sunday she ripped he front leg open from knee to half way down fetlock on the inside. ker-ching ker-ching cash is flowing out like water and the vet comes back and forth to dress and redress. Amazingly, despite the cut looking like a pair of long thick flabby lips the vet did manage to stitch it. The first redressing looked wonderful, the 2nd everything had burst and not that good (had been expected), so I was rather low. 3rd dressing (ker-ching, ker-ching) we finally managed to do it without doping her (it took three of us!) and it looks so much better I'm amazed and feel more positive. Poor thing though, has been in 24/7, and faces a couple of months at least of no work, and how much of that will be stabled I don't know. She is so good about it though, and although she is so short coupled she can trot round the stable when she gets upset, she has now come to terms with being in (and is finally able to be out in the yard for a hour a day if she stays calm) and just waits for people to come and chat to her, and for me to bring my other mare (now in shoes and doing light work!!!) down for a few hours of company. I was so fed up, I'd only had her for 6 weeks before this happened, I feel like I am a jinx. Of course she is not insured for vets fees.

But I am feeling better about it all now, and thought I might have a relieving rant with people who understand!

If it is possible to draw anything positve out of this it is that this period of enforced contact should build into a really positive relationship between the two fo you for the future.
What a nightmare!
