Well I can't contain my anger anymore!

I rode a chesnut thoroughbred a few times for a lady who had absolutely no time for her horses atall, so I used to school her ever so lightly as she isn't too keen, and hack her out with a bombproof pony field mate.

I then stopped working her because I took on a new job which was full time and it required me too really get my head in a book to learn for this particular job. I then found out the mare was for sale, for a mere £500...

She is a 14 year old chesnut thoroughbred ex-racer, has apparently evented and done alot of dressage, and I know she is capable of flying changes etc etc however she has no condition on her, no topline, and she doesn't hack out nicely alone. She is near enough perfect when in company, but can spook, but alone she is an absolute nightmare and I really don't think it is my riding! I used to have a very nappy spinner of an ex-racer and I dealt with him with no problems, same size as her, but I agreed to buy this chesnut mare as I really did feel sorry for her current situation.

She then texts me a week before saying that she has decided to keep the mare as her daughter cannot bare too part with her, so she is going to send her away to be professionally schooled because her daughter was too frightened too ride her, I was gutted, but I text her back saying I do understand and I hope you work it out and if anything changes just give me a text...

I then see she has sent her too be ''schooled'', not professionally mind you, and too make it worse she has now been advertised just 3 weeks later as a perfect teens allrounder...now I know for a fact she isn't that!

Owner seems to think this thoroughbred can be left weeks and then tacked up and ridden and she is no different...completely the opposite, she is VERY typically thoroughbred, after not having been ridden for a few weeks when I first got on her, she was fizzy, attempted a buck when asked to trot, then when I did get a trot, it quickly turned into gallop. She is raced around like a headless chicken by the daughter, constantly galloped, so it is no wonder she has that attitude!
Daughter when she does bother to try and ride actually rides her in a full breastplate claiming it stops her from lifting her head up so high, and also to stop her bucking... (even though she is apparently perfect?) I wasn't going to even try and get into a conversation with her about that..

Ahhhhh I am just so angry but to top it all off, she is now advertised for £2000!!!

Why do people care more for money than the home their horse will go to? ESPECIALLY given the fact she is 14 years old...

:(

--Edit-- I am aware my post contradicts itself a little, but that is purely because I am going by what I get told, teenage daughter is nervous but apparently still has the guts to gallop her flat out...

Leave it a few weeks, that price will soon go down! People really have no concept of what a horse is actually worth, and look to recoup some of what they have spent, when in reality horse ownership is like throwing £50 notes to the wind. You are probably better off buying a younger ex racer, and doing it yourself anyway.

I don't want an ex-racer too be honest, I just knew what a rubbish life she was leading and wanted to help her, I would have only hacked her and then retired her when she was ready, it wasn't because I wanted a cheap horse.

I have a little cob youngster (bit different :P !), so all my attention is on him for now.....

But if she comes up for sale again within my price range I will buy her just to prevent her being sent from home to home :(

There are good homes out there, and she may well findone, but I know where you are coming from, some people really do just see them as commodities, which drives me mad! I always feel we have a certain responsibilty to our animals.

I agree, buying is such a long term thing, you can get a really good [unspoilt] one that has no major problems, and take your time bringing it up to a good standard. Some people have absolutely no idea.
You tried to help them out, and got it thrown in your face imho.

Play the waiting game if you really want her she won't sell for two thousand unless a numpty comes a long if you still want her in a while offer again.

Agree with Goldenstar. Stay on good terms with them so if a numpty does buy for 2k you can keep in touch with new owners. Either new owners will realise their mistake & make a go of it anyway, or they'll want to sell her on again asap when you step back in.

Sorry for delayed replies!

Have spent all day up the yard with the cob!

And yeah I am trying to stay on good terms but she is that type of person that constantly looks miserable and isn't capable of laughing atall!

It just bugs me that people don't put their horses first, more to the point, the fact they are willing to risk a teenagers life?

going through the same thing with my loan pony, sit it out.

Thing is, I am pretty sure some idiot will buy her for £2000 because in the school she can behave impeccably for a while until she gets bored at which point she will soon let you know plus all the gadgets she is made to wear, she doesn't get much choice in the matter, I just hope I can keep in touch with whoever buys her so that when they realise she is not as described I can step in but no doubt they will look to fetch what they paid for her cos most people just don't care!

I don't think anyone will buy her at that price, why would they when there are so many younger ex racers going for under a grand? I would hope they would hack her out when trying anyway and if she doesn't hack alone a lot of people would be put off (certainly I wouldn't buy). Hang in there they seem pretty dumb to have sent her off for schooling instead of just selling her to you!
