When she has a super-special toy, she holds off chewing it and starts a howling at it, it's very strange and quite amusing.

This is her latest favourite of all favourites toy, it's a latex blueberry which has a little low pitched squeak. Apologies for masterchef in the background, I didn't realise it would come over so clearly.

Because she's a Westie - there's just too much personality for the little body to handle sometimes

Oops sorry TFF, if it's any consolation, Suzie also jumped up to look at what the row was all about when I played it back :D

That, DabDab, is a very good point

Interesting - is it only toys that make a noise? Some dogs seem to have oversensitive hearing and don't like certain pitches of noise

Yes it is only (certain) toys which make a noise. Do you get the impression that it's discomfort or dislike that provokes this reaction then?

It's a bit like the dogs that howl when someone plays an instrument - no-one really knows whether it is dislike, painful or trying to have a two sided conversation. Dogs howl to make contact so I would think if it was unpleasant she wouldn't keep doing it, her choice after all

My old GSD used to make a similar noise when my uncle said 'wow' in a certain tone. Like she was replying or trying to emulate him. She never did it with anyone else. He used to go out and 'talk' to her.
