Ok so whilst poo picking yesterday spotted Pidge 'killing' a poo in the field by scraping it numerous times with his front hoof, then the other hoof and back again. He then got down and had a damn good roll near to the poo. Have found a couple more poos that have been Pidged in the field, any ideas why he's doing this?
P.S. he is not dominant in the field, in fact he doesn't even appear on the pecking order list

Too much TV, he's been watching that nutition woman disecting poos to tell you how bad your diet is, maybe he's worried about how many mints he's getting

I too would be interested in the answer to this one. I have often watched the Shetland in our field "kill" the other mares poo's (always thought it was birds before i caught her at it!)

She doesn't roll in them but maybe she just likes annoying me by making them harder to pick up!!

Tweenie used to do this when she was bottom of the pecking order.

I assumed (and I am more than likely WAY off the mark) that she wanted to smell like the dominant horse in the field, so had a damn good roll in the scent of said dominant horse and then hoped that all the other horses thought she was "alpha mare" or that the one horse in particular, that picked on her, would view her more of an equal?

Murphy did this when I took him home one day, he produced a huge poo next to the bench which I sitting on, just baby sitting him to make sure he didn't destroy my garden! Anyway he turned round, sniffed it which is normal male behaviour, then he went mad, pawing at it, grunting and dropping to his knees in it! I was most shocked, I've had him 8 years and have never seen him do this before.
