Last night I climbed on my saint of a new horse for a bit of a solid schooling session. I fully intended to work on transitions - and me sitting up with the weight in my heels. As I hadn't got long - 45 minutes or so, I thought I'd trot around our 80 x 40 arena a couple of times on each rein to loosen both of us up, with a bit of shoulder fore and a few circles down the long side.

It quickly became apparent, as I was trotting along with a not very tight contact, that my bra was not the right bra for riding in. I normally ride in a good sports bra but all four of them seemed to have tunelled deep into that mountain that is my washing pile. I thought this plain, no frills attached, job would be fine. But no. The straps kept slipping down my shoulders and it was intensely annoying. After the fifth time of pulling them up, I thought I had better tighten them. Still trotting. As you do.

St. Larry, the horse that has hardly put a foot wrong since arriving (well, we'll ignore the hosepipe in the grass incident the day before), at this point decided that the combination of his jockey with one hand on the reins and the other on her shoulder fiddling with her bra straps, two horses going off on a hack and the new youngster just arrived at the yard having a moment was just too good an opportunity to miss with regards to throwing a spook.

Of course, this was no ordinary spook - it was a leap sideways of at least 10m, and probably a good 1m into the air. "Aha," he thinks. "She was sitting squiff with her fiddling, and now she really is squiff. I shall now throw in four really big bucks to finish the job."

And he did.

I started riding again in October 2010 after an 18 year break. I managed not to fall off the lunatic KWPN mare I had for two years despite bucks and spooks galore. My strategy was simple - it was just too far to the ground and I was petrified I wouldn't bounce any more. I managed not to fall off my 16.2 and a bit ex-racehorse who scared me witless and tried to kill me with his daily bucking bronco act. Scared me to the point of shaking every time I went to tack him up. I held on for dear life because a) it was too far to the ground, and b) I didn't trust him not to turn round and finish the job.

So, almost three years later I have fallen off a 17hh giant. Well, it was a perfect faceplant out the side door. And I am hugely relieved. The fear was obviously far greater than the danger. But I'm never riding without a sports bra again.

And Larry's halo has been put on the shelf where it will stay until he can prove he's worthy of granny riding him again.:D

Sorry to laugh at your misfortune but I did, mainly because I've suffered the same fate myself. Hope it's only your pride that's been dented.

This should be in the "silliest accident" thread! I feel your pain though, I spent most of Tuesdays hack through the local forest pulling one or other of my straps up. Really must invest in a decent sports jobby, every time I search for one though the prices scare me silly!!

:o I've already got a couple in there, I think. You'd have thought I'd grown up by now.

Thank you. Bruises are minimal. Slightly strained ankle - not sure how. Small cut on my knuckle which bled like a stuck pig so my white saddlecloth is red and white.

Been there with the unsuitable bra and chose the day that RI decided I needed to work without the stirrups.
Nothing like trying to adjust a girth or stirrup to set the chap I ride off too. He will plod along quite happily and it seems the minute I think it's a good time to adjust something he will speed up. I Glad you aren't hurt. 17hh is a really great incentive not to fall off. :-)

Also been there, but with an opportunistic hack, where I hadn't given any thought to my underwear. Lacey bra is not good for riding in, that's all I'm saying. Could start a campfire with less friction :/

Try, or rather DONT try, wearing knickers with a lace edging on the legs! Got off horse and discovered jods were stuck to my seat with blood. Only made that mistake once.

My sports bras also have a tendency to hide when needed so can sympathise with the issue ..... But it reminded me of an incident many years ago at the training centre I was at when a very straight laced student had the same problem. The Chief Instructor, a renowned FBHS with little sense of humour, ordered her off the horse, strode towards her and plunged his hand down the back of her shirt and proceeded to tie the straps together with a piece of binder twine. The look on the girl's face was fabulous - I think she considered reporting him for sexual assault. Actually thinking about it maybe he invented the sports bra that day, certainly don't remember being able to buy them back then!

I'm so sorry I laughed all the way through your post as I knew what was coming.

If it makes you feel better, I nipped out one evening in my nighty (no underwear on) to throw rain sheet on my boy (I keep him at home). My husband said " you better not fall over and fear the neighbours" which I laughed at. Low and behold my darling OAP horse decide to launch at my youngster as I'm under belly doing surcingles and knocked me over...yeap I did a full roly poly for all to see. So it could be worse, at least those bad boys didn't escape from the bra!!!!

Oh it was a matching set, didn't bleed but the pain was indescribable. By the time I got back I was clenched over and hunched into a ball in the saddle to avoid any additional jiggle. Nowadays I'd just have whipped the bra off but I somehow didn't think of that back then :p Older and wiser...

Oh dear OP i have to admit to a little giggle at your post :)

I discovered long ago bad bras, and strappy tops with a rather large bust is not really good riding clothing lol! whilst cantering out on a hack my daft mare slid on wet ground and went over, i promptly face planted the floor before sliding along in a very undignified manner on my 'rather large' chest!! needless to say strappy top ended up around my belly tying my arms to my side and left hand 'boob' made a bid for freedom!!
All happened in front of a group of walkers who were inadvertantly trying not to look and hide there embarassement whilst discretely laughing whilst i attempted to keep some dignity and clean the grass stains off my chest before retrieving my mare who was happily munching on the grass at the side of the field!!

I now strap them down to within a inch of there large lives lol :)

I actually need to find myself a decent sports bra. My old one was awful, practically had to dislocate one shoulder to get the thing off. Any recommendations on easy to get on/off ones that won't break the bank?

OMG, i've sat here in floods of laughter and tears :D

us well blessed ladies could do with a manufacturer making one that fits, is comfortable, does the job with larger boobs and most importantly is easy to put on and take off.

i have a few, the best ones for controll are the most difficult to put on / off, and the easiest one to put on . off are not the best for controll. i have two of the shock absorber make and a M&S own brand version but just isnt controlling enough - any one with any good makes / styles that work ?????

ROFL at these. Glad am not the only one with underwear disasters. Ouch to the lacey rub. I am not overly blessed with boobage so they may not work for everyone, but Sainsbury's own are quite good at holding things down tight. They also have a clasp at the back making them not so difficult to put on.

For those that want recommendations - I have a couple of brands from my running days that work, and I'm rather top heavy! Firstly the ubiquitous Berlei shock absorber, but my main one is my Enell - it's neither pretty or cheap, but by golly does it keep everything tied down. It has about 15 hooks and eyes down the front and there is NO chance of either slippage or escapage from this particular piece of engineering.. :)

PMSL!

Also a hacking story, wearing a bra that was definitely past it's sell by date - I don't think there was even one strand of elastic left in the entire thing. After spending about 15 minutes constantly pulling the thing back up from around my waist I gave up, took it off and hung it on a tree fully intending to pick it back up on the way home.

Yeah, you know I forgot! :o
