Hi

I am so shocked that at the moment, with the way things are, it is virtually impossible to find a horse, any breed, above 15H to have on long term loan as a light hack and for a bit of schooling!

I am simply wanting a nice horse, gelding or mare but there are none available. If anyone knows of any in the north east (hexham) are please do let me know. I have sat online for days, looked through the papers, asked around but nothing

Thanks

Because I bought him a year ago and not lettting him go. they are out there, mine I bought from a dealer in poor condition, he does have his little oddiets, but who doesn't, if he can put up with my foibles, I can put up with his.:D:D

Haha, I don't mind a few little oddities etc. It's horrible, i have found a lovely stable, great land/yard and am now just waiting. Always the way though, if I hadnt found a yard, I would have a horse sitting int he back garden!! lol

i do know of a 19 year old TB mare, approx 15.2 ideal for light hacking and abit of schooling
the owners are looking for a good home(shes the one unclipped in my sig leading..not a good pic)
if interested i'l pm you details..maybe abit too far south for you though

im sure theres one out there for you

How about Heros or Moorcroft.I know most are about 16hh but some are roughly 15hh-15.2hh and they have been well schooled and only go to a home that suits them and mostly go for hacking, because of previous leg injuries that won't stand up to heavy competing. I'd love one but at 61 going on 62, the one I bought does me very well.

Hi Echo

I am a little nervous of ex-racehorses. I had one before (but he was only young) and it really dented my confidence. I am just starting to ride again now after 18 months because he took off with in a really dangerous situation. A normal person would have just got on with it but if terrified me!! hahaha. Worth a look though. Thanks

Any 14.2 handers to 15.2hh's available for loan in Dorset area?

Lightweight/poor doers preferred. Grazing is too rich for inherent fatties.

Will be kept at home with one other pony.... for lots of happy hacking. Needs to be manageable for lady rider who enjoys a good gallop but not bucking, rearing or spooking!

Where can my friend find one of these? She has contacted the local charities but they have none suitable at the mo.

I have a 24 year old 14.2 schoolmaster that I loan out. I very rarely have to advertise and I have my pick of homes. If these ponies are younger they are still worth a lot of money as they are so rare. Basically if you want a good'un and don't want to pay you are looking for rocking horse s**t, they are worth £3000 plus even in this market unless they have a problem.

Hi Bettyboo, yes I have emailed about the hanovarian but there had been quite a bit of interest. Sorry just making an edit to this (checked against the long list of ones I have phoned etc as had a habit of phoning some people twice!).

With regards buying one, no problem with that but just thought if there is one who maybe is just looking for a lot of cuddles and the odd ride that would be great. some I have phoned about have been a little arthritic etc and that for me is fine for what I do. If I can't find one that on loan then I will buy one.

Seeing one at a rescue tomorrow so fingers crossed that should go well.

Hi there - I know you are way up North but give www.barrowhallstables.co.uk They have some FAB quiet happy hackers in but they are for sale. Worth giving them an email or a phonecall and seeing what they have. Normally have 2/3 for sale at any one time. As for loans - they have a fairly large client base so always worth an ask. I am sure you could get a shared load up to Hexham - there's a few National Hunt trainers around here and with the sales and stuff the horses are going all over the country. Worth a looky anyway!

Gosh yes know what its like looking for something suitable for being a Happy Hacker; I was looking about five years ago and it was soooo discouraging, there was nothing about - and still isn't.

What everyone wants is about 14 - 15hh ish, sensible, good sort, not necessary to be TB but bit of cob X-breed will do, and has to be good in traffic with decent manners. But I agree there's just nothing about at the mo, if there ever is. Something perhaps that breeders and producers need to address??? Coz if you can find them, these horses are certainly worth their weight in gold.

I got mine by contacting a trekking centre as quite often they need to reduce their stock for the winter and you might get something on winter loan, then if you like it you could always make an offer. That way you'll have all winter to try it out and see if it suits, but have none of the pressure of buying - so that's an idea. The only problem with having something used to following the bum ahead is that if you do want to hack solo you will have to deal with confidence issues, but its not impossible - I did it with mine, with some help.

It might be worth ringing around/visiting a few riding schools or trekking centres to see if they do need to downsize some of their horses for the winter? Tho' be careful you don't get landed with the problems they don't want in their yard! But maybe worth a try.

thanks all, I will give them all a try - spoke with the RSPCA the other day and they didnt have any in but the local rspca horse centre said to give them a ring weekly. Popping up to a rescue today so see a lovely lad, 17h, ID who's been a great success in dressage but doesn't like to go out hacking too much so we would just stay in the school, which is fine with me!

It's absolutely impossible! Tried trecking and riding schools but no one wants to part. I think I may just have to look a lot further afield. I found an advert last night for a riding school in Enfield selling off their horses. Is it realistic to buy one without seeing it? Or is that just silly?

Please do not buy anything without seeing it unless you are 100% confident with what you are getting or have a fab vet to go and vet/access it for you. You could be buying someone elses problem and then your confidence will be back to zero. Honestly give the yard I mentioned a bell. In fact they might even have some contacts up your way. They are helpful people and I if you want details I am happy to PM you my name etc and tell you who to speak to. Certainly worth a phonecall. You could see them and do Enfield whilst you were in this direction!

Have you tried the World Horse Welfare - they have their horses advertised on the web which they are looking for homes for - the hackers do go quite quickly though but they are particular who they let go to so if you're all set up you have an advantage. I put a wanted ad in the local free ads paper and got a lot of replies - lot of lamos which were no good but eventually got my little Angel - I had been trying for 5 years before that to get the right horse and had lot of disapointments and unsuitables on the way so appreciate what you're going through.
