Why is the pigging A10 in the way?

One of the girls on the yard took me on a new hack this morning and I realised that within half an hour or so I was within spitting distance of an equestrian centre. I knew it was there, I just didn't realise I could ride so near to it so easily. Sadly the A10 is in the way and the only way to cross it is on an elevated pedestrian bridge because they have erected a fence across the road on the other side so I can't just cross at the traffic lights. I know they don't want people to use it as a rat run but how blooming infuriating! So near and yet so far.

I am considering driving over and seeing if there is a gap in the hedge BH could fit through. Would that be awful?
 
No, do whatever you need to, as long as you feel safe, it's not our fault we don't get catered for, how many of us are there, 4.5 million minimum, and we are treated like second class citizens.

I take it you have seen my riding routes, we pay taxes like everyone else, probably more than most.
 
I'm not sure who the gate would belong to? Do you reckon the council? I was thinking about calling up and asking whether they could put in some kind of horse friendly opening. I know I can fit BH places where cars can't go so they wouldn't have to let traffic through. I'm pretty sure my one horse, once a month, wouldn't cause too much extra traffic in the village so hopefully it wouldn't upset the residents. He doesn't even wear shoes so he could sneak through practically silently!
 
I would Pedantic, and BH is pretty good (I think my riding makes even yours look tame), but it is high and really narrow. I don't think I've got the bottle. BH would most likely be ok but if he did decide to freak out up there it would be pretty horrific.

I want to cross right to left and it's a light controlled junction so I'd be happy to do it, BH is good in traffic, but the bridge scares me a bit! :eek: Does the ginger sausage want to come and give us a lead?

I know where you mean and I agree I wouldnt want to take my horse over that bridge. Could you not come out of the park and ride junction then its just a little way along the A10 to get off at the village junction. I would have thought it would be fairly quiet on a saturday.
 
It's quite far up the A10. I think I'd royally p people off doing that! I'm going to call the council tomorrow and ask if they can sort it out for me to ride through the fence. There is a gate in it by the looks of it but I'm sure it's locked. If not, I'm going to go and cut a hole in the hedge with my hedge clippers. Mwah ha ha. It's so unbelievably close, less than a 3 mile ride for goodness sake, and I've worked out how to avoid the A14 now. Just need to work out how to cross the A10. I do love my hacking so!
 
umm I think you should maybe ask the landowner for permission to cut part of their hedge down..otherwise it's known as 'criminal damage'.....tho support your determination otherwise! Just it's no good having access if you are doing 100 hours community service....:-)
 
Is that the one where if you carry on up the road, you get to the big roundabout towards Cambridge? Milton college further back down the road?
I wouldn't fancy that bridge either, but would deffo chance the traffic lights.
 
ride over the bridge. my warmblood is on loan to a chap near the A1 and i rode him out for him when he first had him and we went over the bridge over the A1. not a prob and a busy saturday in wild winter.

It is pretty narrow, I wouldn't want to ride mine over it. A friend keeps her horses in milton and has on a couple of occasions had to cross the a10 at the Milton & landbeach crossover & people have stopped in both directions to let them cross.

Where are you coming from? Histon?
 
To all that recognise it, yep it is indeed the bridge you're thinking of and yep, I'd be coming from Impington.

I would absolutely ride over it if it were wider. I really do think I'll pop over and have a shufty on foot. It might be that there is a way through on a horse that isn't totally obvious or I might decide the bridge isn't so bad that I can't go over it.

Poor old BH. This is what you get as a well behaved horse. Your owner decides to take you all manner of crazy places. If he was an utter tit I wouldn't even dream of leading him across! Still, at least I can say he's good to hack in traffic due to all this. It is quite amazing what they'll learn to cope with if you give them a chance.
 
Back before the French one broke, Vallin and I considered whether that bridge was rideable - I don't think we ever came to a conclusion!

If council will let create a horse gap though I'd be willing to ride over there with you (for all her faults Madam is solid in traffic :) ). Although they may have reached their equine provision quota for the year having just designated another bridleway along the farmland by Westwick!
 
Contact your local BHS rights of way/bridleways officer - and also the same person at your local council.

One bridge over the M3 nr junction 3 was made 'horse friendly' after a lot of lobbying.

Worth asking what the options are with people who deal with this on a daily basis.

If they'll make a horse gap I'll take BH on my own. He is a good type. It would be nice to be able to get through though wouldn't it? Especially as Milton actually have quite a lot on again these days.
