im due to go to Hartpury in 25 days, and now is the time i decide to start second guessing my decision WHY!!!

im worried ill never do what i want to do, im wondering if i should stay and go to college do A levels (which i do NOT want to do) then go onto uni and do what i want to do the way i was trying to avoid

or...go to Hartpury, love it and potentially not end up where i want to be.

what happens if i stay and do Alevels and dont get the right grades (im not very self motivated when it comes to academia) and have wasted an opportunity (Hartpury) what happens if i go to Hartpury and it has all been a waste of time???

i dont know what to do!!! rock and a hard place much, and not much time left to think

help please

Omg! I was worrying about this too! Im due to start at Merrist Wood on the 14th of Sep and for ages i didnt know if i was making the right choice. It was either Horse Management or Law, English, History and Dance A Levels then Law at Uni. It just didnt seem right as nobody else in my school was doing it.
I chose Merrist wood because its what i wanted to do the most and if after the 2 years i still want to do A levels then i'll do them after and then do uni and i'll only be 2 years behind. But in the end i think you should do what your heart tells you to

but thats the problem, i dont know which one to do?! do i go to Hartpury and then come back and do A levels? or go for it the other way around?

I really want to do equine physiotherapy and i know i cant do that through Hartpury, but I dont know if im cut out for A levels, i hated school so so much, i hated the people i was with and i dont want to be at college with them all, i know i wont concentrate etc, but it might be the only opportunity for me to do what i want to do

Well if you go to Hartpury first you might be able to gain more knowledge that could then be specialised into equine physiotherapy after with A Levels that way you wont be with the people you dont like and might be more likely to concentrate? I hated school too, all the written work and concentrating solidly on stuff i really didnt care about lol xx

i think thats what id like to do, go to Hartpury as planned then go on to do A levels and my ND will help me get into College lol as im not expecting my GCSEs to be anything amazing.

i suppose my other worry is my parents wont let me go through both and then onto uni as well, would A levels still be free for me or would i have to pay?

God we are so similar haha..
I think when you turn 19 A Levels stop being free but if you got a part time job during your two years doing your ND that might be a help towards paying for them?x

i think id have to do this the other way round eg A levels first, maybe ill have to find another college, i just know i wont learn if i go to the college ive applied for

god this is so pathetic im like in tears over this, how stupid!

Well i would get cracking on finding another college soooon. Nah its not pathetic at all! Its understandable because this is a major part of your life. Lemme know how it goes

I would go to Hartbury! It would be an amazing experience, you would gain a load of knowledge and you may even find a new career path by going there! Unless you really really want to be an equine pyshio (my sister is currently at uni training to be one and a friend has just finished her degree and there is no jobs in physio currently!) dont set your heart on one career path. Going to Hartbury might open your mind up to other options. Also, you can still ride and be involved with horses, get away from the people you are not so keen on and generally have a great time! I would love to go to Hartbury!

Good luck whichever you choose,

Laura.

My son also went to Uni after doing a BTEch instead of A levels. I don't think he would have gone if he'd done the A level route. Check out what UCAS points your course would give & whether it would be acceptable for the Uni courses you would like to do before you make your mind up, you may not need to do both or may only need to top up your points.

You've got to go with the route you are happiest with now. Like peterthepainter said, you never know if you might change your mind. If you don't there's always another route you can take. There's no point doing a-levels, being miserable for two years and getting mediocre results. You're much better off having a fantastic two years doing what you love and being really successful. You will do better in something you enjoy. I struggled with this decision when I went to uni, Equine science at Writtle or Natural Science at Durham. I chose the later then didn't know what to do with my degree! Ended up teaching which I do love but I can't help but think what could have been if I'd stuck with horses. I love them as a hobby but don't have the time to do what I would really love.

Life's too short to waste 2 years being miserable!!

Go to Hartpury, you'll love it!!!!

life's too short Pixxie. go to hartpury, make the most of every second you're there. if you're desperate to do alevels afterwards, then do that. you can always squeeze them into a year's course... that's why i did. made it much cheaper and less time taken out of my life.

life is for living... perhaps you're just apprehensive about the big move to Hartpury? i know that if i could live my life again, i'd cut my arms off to have the opportunity you have had to go to hartpury... instead i did alevels (5x A grades) and got a degree (first)... and am now in a job that is ok... but not what i love. and i dream of jacking it all in to do something horsey...

xxx

I was just wondering as above - can you do a couple of A-levels alongside the course, which will top up points for if you want to go to Uni later?

In general, I'd go to Hartbury, have a great time, and your equine knowledge will be so much stronger when you come to think about a definite career path.

Have fun!!

I did my A levels at Hartpury, together with BHS exams. Worth a thought if they still do that course!

Was going to say, are you sure hartpury don't offer A levels. I know they always used to.

You HAVE to come to hartpury, you know you will love it. And the ND you are doing will help you in the future when you are looking to go on and get a degree, maybe not in physiotherapy but in something similar, and if you were going to go on and do the ESS degree like you wanted to you could go into animal physio after

Like people have said life is too short to be unhappy doing something you dont want to do and being somewhere you dont want to be.

Stop panicking woman, come to hartpury and have fun!!

i went straight on to doing an ND in horse management and i really enjoyed it but i don't want to work with horses thats what i learnet from it but it wasn't a waste of time because i got a qualification which would entitle me to go onto do a degree but i am now just looking for a job that you can work your own way up the slippery ladder lol

As a mature student doing physio, I cannot stress enough how important A levels actually are!!
If you are happy to do something else then that is fine, but to get on a physio course it is extremely hard and very competitive and has taken me 3yrs of rejection from uni's until i got on the course. Good Luck x

i think you should go to hartpury i went to Oatridge to do a HNC in horse management and it showed that what i reeally wanted to do at that point which was to work with horses and run my own livery yard that i wasnt cut out to work with horses for the rest of my life i'd rather spend time with my own boy so now in 6 days im going back to college do do Highers so i can go to uni to do either nursing or law to provide a better life for me i say go as it is a great expeiriance i'd never forget it thats for sure

hey- the teacher opinion?????

tbh my dear i would do what you want. i have had many students do what they think is right and hate it!!!! uni's are much more open to different qualifications now so you are not restricted. i did an equine science degree and now i am a science teacher in a mixed 11-18 secondary- who knew that was going to happen!!!!!

i no many people have said do a levels and i agree with the fact that there are prob v few jobs in physio at teh mo.
ultimatly from what you have said you need a fresh start and going to hartpury will be just that. there are many ways to take a levels later on anyway. if you know you wont focus and may not get the grades then dont torture yourself through them- you wont work and you will fail. i have seen it hapen many times.

only you can decide but it sounds like hartpury is a good start point!!!

good luck & pm me if you need any more info xxx

Thankyou all so much for that, after much stress last night etc and a good talking to from my ex of all people i have emailed the university id like to attend and asked if my ND + A level Biology (which is the required Alevel the other 2 are pretty much optional) would be enough to meet their entry requirements i also stated that i want to specialise in Equine which makes my ND relevant.

so...if they come back and say i can do that, i will be going to Hartpury and doing A level biology in my gap year. and if not, ill do A levels after Hartpury, i think id be stupid to pass up going and i do need a fresh start Thankyou to you all and to the ex (never thought id say that lol)

I always thought you had to do human physio before equine... either way are you sure you have picked the right career if you arent very academic, as physio will be alot of exams and academia!!

yes you do thats what i mean sorry ive not made myself very clear, that is what im talking about and when i said im not very academic, im perfectly capable and by no means lacking the ability its very much unless its something im passionate about or what to do strongly i struggle to apply myself. but if its something i want to do passionately i work my ass off

I really wanted to go to Hartpury, but instead listened to advice from my parents and went and did my law degree. I was offered a training contract afterwards with a fab firm but it just did not feel right so i pulled out of the contract. I then worked in sales. I have now taken a £9k pay cut to work in a job which will allow me more spare time, so in that time I am going to do my BHS stages so that I can finally work in an environment I love. xx

I also understand that to be the case. And as I understand it, getting onto a physio course will require at least 4 good solid A levels, at the very least!!

I think Showjump2003 is qualified as a physio and could probably give better advice on the matter.

As i said above i know you have to do human physio first, i have emailed the university i am thinking of attending as they accept BTEC NDs as an alternative qulaification to get onto their physiotherapy degree course. BUT seeing as my BTEC ND is not a scientific one, and Biology is the only SPECIFIED A level this university requires you to have the other A levels are for the UCAS points i have emailed them ask if my ND coupled with an A level in Biology would meet their entry requirements.

I know you have to do human physiotherapy to specialise.

(it require 3 A levels or equivalent to one must be in biology/human biology or the ND must be related hence why i asked what ive asked them)

I did A levels (which i loved doing, i went to a specialist 6th form college and had a great time) and then went to Hartpury to an equine business management degree so I got the best of both worlds. IMO it was much more fun being a degree student as we didnt have to look after the school horses at the crack of dawn like the ND's do, we just had our own horses to play with and the school horses IF we wanted them, could go out drinking with the boys, do pretty much what we wanted without being monitored the whole time
smile.gif
and still live on site! oh and i got a degree from the bristol business school that got me a good job afterwards
