Why were pro's at Badminton really unhappy with grassroots?

As title really. In this week's H&H it say's that those doing dressage on Friday were handicapped by noise from grassroots X-country. BE's Paul Graham said he'd looked up horses' previous results and they didn't seem to be affected. Also, had heard that riders were unhappy beforehand (would they have been able to anticipate being affected by noise?). Do you think this was the real reason, or maybe they didn't want to share their elite stage with lesser riders?
