Hmmm, just been reading the Home page and I see that a farriers wife has set up a new website - to help people find farriers. I don't see the need, is that not what the FRC website is for? What do you guys think about this? helpful? not necessary? or just, why the hell not??

Might have been better to set up Farrier Match.com...that combined with Vet Match.com and I might be signing up! All bills covered for horse and you never see them from dawn to dusk - perfect!

Its pointless having a list of farriers. What would be better is only putting farriers on there who will accept new clients!!

and/or answer their phones.

one thing in its favour is it wouldn't take long

well just done a search in my area and never heard of one of them!!! none of the regular farriers in my area are on there. my farrier isn't but he is on the FRC website. so its pointless really

Given that the farriers opt in to the site (I looked at my area and couldn't see any of the farriers I know on there) I think it should mean that those on there are those accepting new clients...

I think it's a very good idea if;

A. The farriers listed are taking on new clients.

B. They answer their phones or get back to you within a reasonable time.

C. People who have had the use of these farriers can leave a comment about the service they recieved. Sort of like a star system on reliability, professionalism, & how good they are at their job. Also, whether they specialise in remedial shoeing etc.

I'd be only too happy to reccommend my old farrier as he was absolutely top notch. I just wish he came with his own little carry case so I could have him up here too!
Believe me, losing his farriery skills was one of the major drawbacks of moving!

i've just tried it and it came up with 6, out of those i have heard of 1. There are several farriers in my area none of the usual suspects came up and it made suggestions for ones that are miles away despite my search criteria. I think it could be a good idea for people who want to change farrier or move to a new area if it had more names registered.

I have for the first time today registered and used the H&H online forum as part of a research exercise I am working on...and I am shocked and appalled at the attitude towards new equestrian ventures - something that has clearly been developed with 'us' in mind.

Having had a quick scan of the site, I am sure there are things that we all might have done differently and there will without doubt be things that evolve and improve in responce to 'constructive' and helpful feedback from users.

The majority of comments I have read on this thread this morning leave me exasperated at the attitude shown to those showing an ounce of entrepreneurialism.

Surely you might expect that not all farriers are listed on day 1 of site launch - it's a chicken and egg - the farrier's wife either holds launch of the site until she has every farrier listed - or uses the PR and industry exposure to build her listings - a business and marketing decision she has to take and I can understand why you might appear frustrated at not being able to test the tool in search of your own farrier - but in actual fact is this not the point of the tool??? Your farrier and every farrier you know is unavailable so is it not useful for the website to throw names at you that you haven't heard of??
Admittedly I am not sure of the value of the qualifications part - I haven't ever selected a farrier solely on this basis, but I guess it is just trying to be comprehensive.
Why don't you give the site a chance to develop and contact the company running it with your constructive feedback for improvement - not just damn other people's initiatives when clearly a lot of time, energy and investment has been made. Put the shoe on the other foot and imagine your responce at your comments. if you don't like it don't visit.

From an angry, like minded entrepreneurial type person.
