Just picked young lab up from the vets, about an hour ago. She had her tail amputated today. She is obviously sore and miserable and wobby. She wants to do a wee but I keep taking her out and she starts to squat, then won't and drags me back to the house. Is it because she is wobbly? Or her bare bum!? Poor little girl, I am incredibly stressed.

Oh Clodagh, I hate looking after a dog who has just had an anaesthetic. She won't feel herself at all. If possible just let her sleep and keep her warm. If you can get through tonight she should be a different dog in the morning. xx

She probably hasn't had much to drink today either. Poor Tawny, she'll get used to it very quickly. How much has been removed?

She may prefer soft food tonight as she'll have been intubated, however she is a lab.......

She has at least now stopped asking to go out. She is asleep at last. She only has a stump left, it was cut off at the vertebra where it bends when they are in season, if you can picture that.
I hate that you can't explain to them. .
As I forgot to buy her any chicken she had a tin of vet food for supper. She is starving!
Poor Pongo.

Well we have wee'd but still no poo. Poor little thing.
She plonked her bum down to have a scratch this morning on the back path and has got dirt on her stump - do I just leave it be?

Don't suppose there is much there to poo. Can't really advise about her stump without seeing what it looks like, were you not given advice from the vets about ongoing care? Sounds as if she is brighter this morning though.

She has pooed! Yee hah!
Stump seems clean enough now she has plonked it on her bed. They didn't say anything about doing anything to it, I will leave it I think. She has loads of tiny stitches and it is bleeding a bit so hopefully will keep clean enough. She has a check up on Monday.

Glad she's feeling better but I'm amazed they haven't said anything about keeping it covered for at least a few days even if it's just to stop the stitches being snagged on something let alone the dirt that could still get inside due to open skin. Jasmin has just had her dew claws done and she has to keep the stitches covered with Vetwrap until they're out and the skin stops being raw; would have thought a tail rubbing against the ground when she sits would be likely to pick up debris. Mind, one flick of her tail and the Vetwrap would be likely to be whizzing over your shoulder I expect!

When she had a tail I spent many fruitless hours trying to get something to stay on it so now that it is 4" long I think it would be even harder!
Research on here shows that they tend to leave them uncovered, I will just have to have quicker reactions to stop her sitting on it. Mind you, my kitchen floor tends to be a bit grubby too.

She now feels perfectly fine and dandy.
Anyone know why she cannot go for walks while the stitches are in? I can't see what harm it can do and she is so incredibly fit she is bouncing off the walls.

Poor lass. So glad she is feeling better now. Is she allowed no exercise at all? (seems strange). Surely walking her on a lead can't help if you ensure the stump stays clean.

I have no idea, I agree it seems very odd. Will ask on Monday. I am walking her anyway, and off lead (she won't go to the loo on the lead). I took her and old lurcher for a 20 minute elderly and infirm stroll this morning. She just trots along quite calmly. We don't meet any other dogs. I wonder if the vets are thinking don't take her for a jaunt to the dog park? This afternoon we are fencing so she can come out with us and potter around for a bit.

I am sure that will be fine. Hope she heals quickly. (why did she need her tail amputated btw?)

She damaged it last year out shooting and it never healed, then after many ABs seemed OK until first days shooting this year. It never bled much, just oozed, but she may have broken the small bone in the very end? It had a deep seated infection.

Ah what a shame, but hopefully she won't have any problems with it now. Hope it heals quickly and she is soon back to bouncing around again.
