Why would you put a mare in foal

I guess the owner can't afford to keep her. I had to sell my in foal mare when I was made redundent. It was the horse or the house. I chose to keep a roof over my head.

Some people do put them in foal then sell them, particulary young mares that have passed their MPT then go on the the elite sales

always dubuois when i see those adds x
always wonder if they know that its likely that the mare has had a hard time before , however like hollycat said sometimes there are probably genuine reasons x

I would have done same as you but there are so many for sale I wouldn't have thought all the owners were in same position as you?

Some of the mares for sale aren't well bred or well put together and look so sad - it just upsets me :( Maybe I'm being over sensitive?

No I don't think you are being oversensitive. It is sad. Particularly if it is a mare in not so good circumstances - poor condition, untrimmed feet, not wormed etc etc and just pregnant by any old stallion to make a quick buck for her owner. I haven't seen these sort of ads but this is why we end up with lots of poor quality horses going through the sales and never ending up with a good home or happy life :(
