MD has been hacking alone for weeks now (she likes it that way actually!) but tonight she turned up at the same time as Hedgehog Child & asked if they could please hack out together - stupidly, I said 'yes, if HC stays behind MD & BB, doesn't keep trying to overtake them so she can be in front, etc., etc.'!

Get to top of drive with lethal road in front of them (where they have to turn right to get out!) & as MD is looking & saying to wait because a car is coming, HC decides she has enough time to cross & despite MD shouting at her to wait, crosses anyway, causing car to brake fairly 'briskly' & leaving MD stranded on the other side of the road!

Thank god BB (for whom 'waiting' is not a strong point!) remains calm & stands still, as car after car passes preventing MD from being able to get out!
When she is able to do so, MD waits until they are off the main road & then gives HC a right mouthful of her total lack of road sense, the only effect of which is to cause HC to sulk & trot off leaving her behind!

On way home, as HC is riding on the wrong side of the bl**dy road, MD tells her to move when she hears a car coming but instead of dropping in behind BB, the stupid child trots to get in front of her, causing BB to do an emergency stop or she would be wearing HC's pony as a hat! Arrgghh!

I can't believe I let MD go out with her, after all the previous incidents etc. but I really thought the message had finally gotten across!
I feel sick when I think that if BB had not obeyed MD by standing still instead of trying to join her companion, they could both have been flattened within feet of the drive!

Never again, I promise, it's just not worth the risk & I hope anyone else in the same position will not be so foolish as to 'feel sorry' for someone & let either themselves or one of their kids go out someone who is blatantly just not safe to be let loose in the big wide world!

Honestly JAK, I think yours is a triumph of optimism over common sense!!

The HC sounds like an utter BRAT and a menace to road users and MD alike. Let her get squished on her own time!!

Bloody idiot. I dont blame you for being cross. At my old yard we had a livery that used to pull stunts like that - everyone hated riding with her but nobody had the guts to tell her why. Well apart from me. I told her she was a liability and that under no circumstances would I ever ride with her again. Mind you she was 39 and a teacher!

Age & profession is obviously no barrier when it comes to blatant stupidity!

I have told MD that I only allow her to hack out because she is so sensible on the roads & how proud I am of her attitude & common sense! Every week we see people slobbing along, chatting away to each other, paying no attention to their horses but she makes no attempt to imitate & the second she leaves the yard, turns into Little Miss Prim & Proper!

She despises wearing the hi-vis gear but puts it on regardless, though she sees local dressage & showjumping types hacking out without but I trust her completely not to 'ditch it' as soon as she gets out of sight! lol

I have been a very bad parent but will not make the same mistake again, no matter how much the pleading or resulting 'bad feeling'!

Stupid people should stay at home for their own safety.

But sadly, they just won't.......!
Presumably, they don't realise how stupid they actually are?

Would it be in bad taste to say just like her namesake?
Yes? Oh well!

JAK, some people will always be stupid beyound belife, only thing to do is avoid them and stay out of their wake.
Thank God BB was good and nothing happend to MD and her.
Have a glass of wine, relax and thank God you are MD Mum not HC's!!

Well I guess that goes hand in hand with being stupid; they're so stupid they don't even know they are stupid. What can you do - just got to grin and bear it. I'm glad my lot are not stupid as I have a tough time trying not to laugh at stupid people.

There have been several serious accidents (at least one horse-related) on this short stretch of road, so how many more clues do people need that it's bl**dy dangerous?

Maybe our kids (having grown up with a succession of high performance cars & two car mad parents! lol) are just more 'car aware' than other kids of a similar age & more clued up when it comes to judging & anticipating speed & distance, something that is very difficult to do when you don't drive yourself (as obviously MD doesn't yet!)?

I don't know, I would hate to think HC was 'the norm' though! Eek!

Heading to the yard the other week we met a horse and rider in the middle of the road on a bad bend. We never travel fast but it was a road well known for its fast cars. The person was really lucky

I have come to the conclusion that HC (& probably others like her!) ride on the roads as though they have entered into another dimension or something & they are the only thing on the road!
They apparently have this impervious mental bubble surrounding them and/or are literally unable to link their own actions & attitude to any possible consequence, which is what makes them not only a danger to themselves but also to others?

My hubby was a mechanic and he showed me a car that hit a horse and rider, it shock me up. I ride out alone with my fashionable yellow bib lol, but common sense tells us how to behave on the road which HC obviously has none of

Yes, MD loves her 'fashionable yellow bib' too.......NOT! She hates the yellow 'bath hat' even more! lol
It was made clear from the word go however that the only option was 'Put the hi-vis on or get off the pony!'

You can teach people a lot of things but common sense it would seem, is something you either have or you don't unfortunately!
It doesn't help that HC's pony is so good & reliable on the roads, as this just makes her take him for granted I think & gives her a false sense of security!
BB, being somewhat sharper & much less 'traffic friendly', forces MD to think ahead more, though of course in an ideal world, that shouldn't really make a difference!

Good for your daughter for being so sensible, and I agree definately no more hacking with the dreadful sounding HC. I always go out with hi-viz gear on whatever the weather.
