My 19year old pony mare started behaving very strangly yesterday.

We strip graze the field so they have a small amount of long course grass in the morning. Everytime she was taking a mouthful was throwing her head up backing off and running around in circles? As if uncomfortable/in pain.

She eats her dinner and short grass with no problems at all?

I got the vet out they could find no cause?
She is very bright and happy.

She had a tooth extracted begining of August and I assumed this was causing her pain but all looks perfect.

Vet advised bute and re see next week.

Has anyone come accross this behaviour at all?

Thanks

Are you able to see the hole left by the tooth extraction and check there s no food matter or hay stuck in, in which case you should flush it out using a syringe with salt water or a spray bottle with satly water. Check inside cheeks for mouth ulcers and cuts from sharp teeth. Good luck

Not come across this but teeth/mouth/jaw/poll pain would be my first thought and it might be a sharp, sudden pain. Did the vet use a gag to fully inspect all the mouth? Tooth abscess brewing? Neck/shoulder problem?

Yes vet put gag in and fully examined and flushed out the hole (was a very shallow root so not much room for food to impact) there was a minute spur that was rasped but shouldnt of been enough to cause a problem :(

The tooth was extracted due to an abcess so I assumed the socket had got infected but all perfect! Would of been easier if it was that as we would know what it is and could treat.

do you strip graze using electric fencing?

if you do maybe the grass was wet and she was getting low grade shocks that were only felt inside her sensitive mouth, just trying to think outside the box

Went back to the vets today for more investigations and they are thinking more trauma related as she also starts to be very uncomfortable when she has her head and neck in certain positions. So its a case of rest and bute for 2-3 weeks.

Bless her. I think i would get a chiro out to see her too as they deal with bones and muscles, the bute will only be masking the problem.
