Hmm having a bit of a dilema in the last couple of weeks. I cannot lead Orkan out the field, he refuses to come out and simply plants himself. Only way to get him out is by carrying a lunge whip

Its happened since he has had individual turnout and moved yards so I wonder whether he feels attached to his field in some way and doesn't want to come in. He also has a soft tissue injury so has been out of work for a few weeks and I have only been able to ride him a handful of times since I bought him due to the injury so I wonder whether he isn't bonded with me. I need to start bringing him in next week to start slow work again but I fear I will look like a nutter going down the field with a lunge whip.

Any tips?

Yes I think he only associates coming in with vets and stabling so he refuses to come in. Perhaps when we do some fun hacking and suchlike he will want to come in and do stuff.

I lost my schooling whip hence the lunge whip! Its that or a small crop which isn't very helpful. Am getting a new one for Xmas hopefully so I won't look like so much of a nutter.

Dear me horses eh

"he only associates coming in with vets and stabling" very sensible horse for avoiding coming in then!

Time consuming (which you might not feel like in this weather!) but can you try bringing him in for a treat/fuss/whatever he likes then turning him straight out again. LOTS of times, with LOTS of different fun things so he doesn't get too in the routine of coming in=bad things/one sepcific nice thing?

I did answer my own question then didn't I... Although stupid as it sounds I hadn't considered it before I wrote it down. All good ideas, as soon as the yard has thawed (far too dangerous to bring anything in at the moment) I will constantly bring him in for treats and cuddles, feed etc. Will have lots of time over the Xmas period to pamper him before I start the scary job in Jan

Have you tried riding him out of the field? I had a little s*d of a pnoy who would refuse to go anywhere when led, but if jumped on his back even in just a headcollar he'd be fine.
