I'm not well up on bits anymore, as Henry has been bitless (sidepull) for years. However, since we moved to a yard, we are having a couple of brake problems, particularly out in company! The only bit I have at the moment is a loose ring snaffle, which I've cleaned up and will ride out in this evening (if I get time!), but the whole reason I went to a sidepull was because his brakes in this weren't superb either and the sidepull seemed to be better - I'm hoping that temporarily using the snaffle will gain his attention, due to the different stimulus.
So, long term, I'm looking at other options. Somebody on the yard recommended a Wilkie bit, as they can be used as a snaffle or with a bit more poll leverage. So, am canvassing for opinions. Are they effective? What I need basically is something that gives brakes when really required. An example of our recent problems for info:
-overtaking another horse on narrow bridleway at gallop, supposed to be cantering!
-refusing to walk on a lane. Nothing dangerous, just a mad 'mission' trot (this was riding out alone!)
He's not done anything toooo bad, but I had a nasty accident in September, so my nerves are still a little fragile, as the accident was on a horse used to galloping everywhere and when asked to slow down, she bucked me off the side door and I went off in an amubulance! You can see why I don't want a repeat!!
