Hey,

Im looking for a first horse and i have just seen an ad on a site for a horse that is being sold from a livery at my riding school. I have seen him being ridden and he looks lovely. Only problem is he is 14.3, and i am 5ft8 but i am only 8 and a half stone.
Ive asked my instructor to keep an eye out for any horses for me, and he knows this horse is for sale (i think) but he hasnt recommended it to me.
Its used on my pony club rally, so ive seen it quite a few times and it looks really nice.

Would the height be a problem?
i know it varies on horse to horse and person to person, but i just want to know if im wasting my time even asking my instructor to talk to the owner about it, or phoning the owner themselves.

The horse is no way cobby, but the rider who i see riding him would only be a few inches shorter than me and the same build.

Thanks :)

I wouldn't have thought he would be too small to be honest why don't you ask your instructor - he may not have said anything for another reason he doesn't think he's right or he may not have realised you like this one.

I think you should definitely try this pony, and see how you feel on him. I would also ask someone to take photos of you while you're on him, so you can have a good look at yourself, to reassure yourself.

Imho, you should be fine ! sm x

Doesn't sound like he would be too small to me. I would ring up the owner yourself and have a chat to them about him and see what they say. After all if you dont ask you dont get

I don't really see why you shouldn't go see this pony, unless you are 14 and still growing!

Haha, im actually 15, but i have stopped growing. i doubt ill grow anymore seeing as im already a little taller than my mum and nearing my dad. so i doubt ill get any taller.

Go and try him definitely, you will only know how you feel after a try. Plus I’m 5ft7, considerably heavier then you and I ride my Mum’s Fjord , who is 14’1hh-ish and I feel absolutely fine on him.

ive ridden all types of heights, but im quite long in the leg. i have ridden a 14.2 and looked massive. we were doing pairs riding and i was paired with the horse that is up for sale, but he looks considerably higher than the 14.2 i was on.
maybe they've mismeasured? or maybe theyve put the height down to get more interest, eitehr way hes a lovely looking horse.
he looks as though he can be a bit strong (but not stupidly strong, he just likes to sort his own striding out) when jumping but can jump massive. and he was a bit funny out hacking when we went, but id surely get used to both wouldnt i?

Im planning on asking my instructor next week about him, thanks for the advice xx
