Will hunting really make

Yes, but only when it's hunting. It will go back to being a plod (if that is what is is usually like) afterwards, then light up again when hunting.

Not necessarily.

Hunting was the making of my nappy little mare. It completely changed her outlook on life, and she became a much more forward thinking happy horse because of it.

Can't say I agree Wagtail. Since I hunted my lad for the first time last year he's been a different horse. Previously only hacked out from the age of 4 til 9 and while not a total plod he was safe, sensible and always listened.

Now he bounces, gets excited if there is any 'new' horses around and is quiet a handful except if I hack at home. I don't mind it so much and it does make XC and show jumping fun but after serious problems last sat at the opening meet I can hand on heart now say I don't have a 'ploddy cobby' and I do have a very forward going nut case!! Still love him to death though! ;)

she is so forward in the school, yet hacking alone or in company is so slow and a real worrier, someone at yard suggest a few hunts to change her outlook, i was in 2 minds as to whether it'd work....

Yep, this ^^^

It is also excellent training for getting them going forwards over jumps in a nice rhythm.

Worth a try but do be warned, my lad is a handful after hunting...won't settle in his stable, won't eat properly, wouldn't be caught (for YO but did for me) and is very very sharp to ride. Okay if that's what you want but be prepared.

THAT said friend took her youngster out for first time this weekend and he was like a dead duck!! Lol!! So some of them just don't get why it's so exciting and other get over excited!!!

If she is a worrier you need to look at her education and how she was introduced to hacking etc.

Hunting won't make any difference to this situation, imo, as there are no cars on the hunting field.;)

She was led out, and then hacked with a bomb proof yet confident older field mate, its not roadwork thats the problem, she creeps around the woods like theres a monster hiding out there, i know those woods like the back of my hand and id feel confident in pitch black out there but she frets even if another horse marches on ahead.

im gonna hunt my 5 yr old to hopefully encourage him to be more forward thinking, just hope it doesnt send him completely loopy!

i have had same advice about hunting though from many people who have hunted

I have taken a few backward thinking horses hunting and it has been the making of them. Their attitude totally changes and i have found it has made a few wimps braver.

I definitely think hunting is fabulous for many horses, ecspecially those that need to get more forwards/bolder/rhythm etc.
It has also been great for my very whizzy pony, as he is inclined to be very bouncy (never rears, but just gets v pingy) and out hunting he can go forward, find a natural rhythm and be completely chilled out as he has his "herd" around protecting him. He is always much nicer for a few days after a days hunting :D
I reccomend it for many horses!

i would if i was you but if it was me i would stay with a nice sensible group give your horse every chance to learn and have fun with out getting a fright or bad habits i have found it good for a number of horses but 1 that stands out is a mare i had she was young and very big and was finding getting her legs in harmony when jumping a very hard job! and after a nice hunt where i stayed to the back with a experienced horse for a lead she was flying after it way quicker and had the attitude of a gp show jumper after it!!!

Worked for me ... I'd never have got tempi changes with out hunting.., but for a few days after loads of natural impulsion that got us over hat hurdle ( didn't hunt him myself ( big scaredy cat)
