Hi there my mum had a 6yr old Shetland pony and i would like to ride her, (she will need to be backed first obv) but i was wondering if i will be to big for her, im 22yr old and 4ft 11ish, i weight 8.3 stone just now but im loosin weight im wanting to get down to 7.5 so not long to go, but would i look daft on her or be to big for her, shes roughly 10hh possibly sightly bigger and quiet stocky?? comments appreciated

I don't think you will... I had a friend years ago who had two shetland ponies that she used to ride, and I'm sure she was around 9stone and taller than you.

As long as you're not galloping around and jumping big fences I'd say you'll be all right!

/not medical or scientific advice

I asked this question the other day, my daughters shetland needs more exercise and people said I could ride it. I'm 5ft2 and 8st. To be honest imho I'm definitely too big and regardless of height I wouldn't put anymore than 6st in weight on a shetland. They may be sturdy and stong but it cant be good for they're joints etc.

Totally agree.

Better a shetland that a Welsh Sec B or something I'd have thought? (which might have the height but less bone/weight carrying ability?) I'd have thought the only issue you may have is comfort - tiiiiny saddles!! I've ridden a few shetlands and I'm 5'4 and about 50kgs now, would have been 40kg ish then, maybe a tiny bit more?
