Will peoples' attitudes to animals ever improve?

Or are we just on a downward spiral? It seems every week there is a story of neglect or downright abuse of a defenceless animal. Tonight, whilst browsing my local Dogs Trust website I see this dog for rehoming. I just can't believe the cowardness of people yet I am sure this is only one of many cases these rescues come across all too often

Is it because they were too cowardly to have him PTS? These old dogs (well, no any dog) should not have to go through this stress at this time in their lives. Makes me so mad :(

O balls, he's Leeds. If he was Snetty I would seriously have been on at my mum to take him home bless his gorgeous old socks.

yeah, it is Leeds. Just 5 mins down the road from me which I suppose is why it gets me more mad as it's on my doorstep and I can't believe someone just left the poor dog tied there. I guess on the plus side they knew it would be taken in and cared for but I can just imagine how distressed my dog would be if I did that so I can't get my head round anyone doing it.

I just despair at people: on the other pet forum, there's someone asking if she should get a raccoon and on googling, there are breeders all over the UK :frown3: So depressing.

It is really depressing. There just seems to be no end to it. This centre as well was the one the other week on daybreak showing a puppy that had been found as a newborn dumped in a bin! People's shear disregard for animals is truly shocking. As for breeding racoons and wanting them as pets -WTF??!! Those will be the next animals 'let loose' in to the wild I can just see it!

Well, your last paragraph gives me a little hope. As a farmer (retired) I am no stranger to death and see PTS as often the kindest thing to do. Frankly, the vet programs on TV really annoy me because the operations often seem unnecessary and to be screened for no other reason than to make money. Animal welfare and limiting suffering have nothing to do with it.

I had some kids here one day and I asked them what they had been doing. They said they'd been watching TV where a vet set a pheasant's broken leg! Am I alone in thinking this is the world gone crazy?

An excellent post, and NO, you're not wrong.

There's an interesting connection between your post and that of the opening post, in that the OP has pointed towards animal abuse, just as you have. Abuse can be found just as easily within "action" as it can be in "neglect".

We are living in a Society where the well being of any animal under discussion is rarely the point of focus. The voice of the moderate is rarely heard above the clamour of the generally well intentioned, bigot.

Alec.
