i know it seems a bit soon to be thinking about this but i have a 2year old trotter x tb... she is croup high which doesnt help but i was wondering, will she ever trot or canter properly?

i watched her in the field with my gelding the otherday and she just looks so demented its unbelevable haha, i know her legs are all over the place but when she gets excited and she trots her back legs go wide and they are like peg legs?! she doesnt bend them at all... and her canter well theres another story, what canter she daisy cuts at the front and trots at the back even trying to keep up with my 17.2 she still does it, i know shes never gonna be a dressage pony but she equally cant jump with no trot or canter :o

hmm opinions please i would post a pic of her but i have no idea how haha

thankkssss :p

hi i have a full trotter who used to do the same, but hes finally fully grown at 6lol,and has developed a fairly decent canter,he used to canter like a 3 legged camel:D

I have had a few trotters and they have been hard work in terms of training and maturing, but they DO mature into lovely all rounders! I have a gelding whose favourite trick right now is to "pretend" he's cantering by doing this strange lollop ... but even he is slowly growing into himself and starting to move like a sane horse!

waiting for my irish sports horse was the longest, age of 8 years he finally managed to canter the full school... and before anyone starts, he was profetionally ridden away at 4 and they said there was no point as he was just a gangaly idiot and that there would be no point in starting yet and to give them a call when he could finally walk without falling over his feet, it took a while :o poor little doofus but hes so good now at the age of rising 10 :) but then again i wouldnt put it past the breeders to have put the wrong year of birth so they could get rid of him as he was only 15.3hh and now hes 17.2hh and only just finished growing hmmm food for thought

I bought a cow-hocked croup-high 6yr old mare cheaply because her canter was so bad, despite her fabulous breeding. Had her 3 months, at first she couldn't manage 2 strides of canter without breaking or going disunited. She was hopeless even in the field, cantered like she had a wet nappy on - legs akimbo, not bending at the hock, so similar to your peg leg description, I imagine.

But last few weeks she has improved, bombed around today and managed quite a decent few laps with hardly any changes behind - I was so pleased I barely noticed the divots flying round my field :( - and she worked nicely on the lunge tonight - a whole 20m circle in canter, although the downward transition was another matter!

So don't panic yet, and look the other way when she canters - works for me:)

Yes I echo all the others - 2yo is still so young and such a lot of growing to do. Not all horses are mature enough at 3 to break and back. Most iberians start at 5 and even then it can be frowned upon depending where you are...

Sounds like you have a good few more years of watching her see-saw her way up to full height :D
