My little dog stepped on a loose strand of electric fence about 3 weeks ago and got a belt off it which scared her. Now at the yard she constantly looks terrified, shakes and has her tail between her legs because she's worried it will happen again as she hasn't made the connection that the fence did it. She won't move away from my side and is constantly jumping up at me to pick her up. She looks so depressed and isn't running about and getting the exercise she needs! I've resorted to putting her in the cage in the car as she's getting in my way, constantly under my feet as she's seeking reassurance but when I'm getting 2 big horses in from the field she's in danger of getting trod on!

Any tips? Hate seeing her so scared, it's been 3 weeks now and she just won't buck up!

My bitch did that, and flatly refused to even enter the field she was in, or go onto the yard. She used to sit sulking at the top of the field by the gate. A bit of fuss and some ball throwing (plus a bit of time) sorted it out gradually.

I would put her in the crate while you do your jobs then spend a bit of time playing with her, so she's not just moping and scared while she's there, but having a good time.

It's horrible to see them sad isn't it! Even throwing muck up on the muckheap (she loves poo) won't cheer her up. Okay I'll try that, thanks!

I'd make a lot of positive association, so as mentioned, play with her, feed her, give her a stuffed bone or Kong at the yard etc etc etc, make the yard a really great place to be and try not to mirror her stressyness or pander to it too much, be brisk and businesslike as if nothing had happened.

Okay thanks, will go get her a kong, she loves her food!
