I cant see any reason why not, but I prefer metal bits as they do not rub or cause sores. A nice mullen mouth snaffle would be my preference.
Also, as the pony is so young, I would clip the lead rope onto a nose band rather than on the mouth and get the baby used to wearing this arrangement before the show.

My friend showed her 2 1/2 year old gelding in a showing class and she won. How you do it is your choice, but my friend felt this was best for her horse at the time. It depends on how used to a bit and bridle the youngster is.
