My vet recommended I buy eye drops from the chemist for my dog's conjunctivitis and it got me thinking. He needs another bottle of canine cortaflex at £ 27 ?. Glucosamine tablets for humans are about £5 and I wondered if its ok in general to give animals human products.

My vet told me yes - in fact recommended that I did as it would be cheaper! You need to make sure that you are using the same dose of active ingredient though.

My parents used to give their old english setter human glucosamine. It worked wonders and im sure it was the vet that told them to as its much cheaper.
Give your vet a call to check its right for your dog im sure it'll be fine though.

Henry gets human cod liver oil and I was thinking about getting some with added glucosamine when this bottle runs out - so would be interested to know what the vet says. The human cod liver oil was on the advice of my vet.

I actually might start taking it myself for a dodgy knee so hope it is ok as it will be cheaper to get one type!

My dogs have always had the human cod liver and and glucosamine and they're still going!! 2nd dog does have arthiritis but on tabs and only 1/2 tab of pain killer she runs around like a greyhound still..

Yes you can use it but there is a tablet even better and i cant remember the name

its Glucosamine and something begining with C ask your vet he will tell you.

I asked my vet and she said that dogs use a different type of glucosamine to humans....

We have Glucosamine Sulphate whereas dogs utilise Glucosamine Hydrate????

Has anyone else got any knowledge of this as I would love to save a bit of money

THIS link looks at the difference between the two. The summary seems to be that the sulphate version has slightly less glucosamine available but is prefered by humans while the hydrochloride version hasn't (which may be why it is preferred for dogs?)?
