Need to know height wise as I need a height certificate for the welshie. Hes still growing and is over 13.2 but not yet reached 13.3! Will the vet say hes 13.2 or 13.3? Thanks

Thanks everyone.... very helpful.
Also just curious generally - what would you call him? I call him 13.2 although he's bigger. Def Personal preference, just was curious to see others opinions!

A JMB height certificate can only be done by certain vets, you have to go to the approved pad as well. You should go with the ponys shoes off, well trimmed feet, withers clipped and relaxed.
They will give you a height to the nearest mm.

Most people are very bad at estimating the height of their pony.

You should call him what he is. If he is bigger than 13.2hh you don’t call him 13.2hh

Why do you need to know? What age is the pony and what breed or type? So many variables. I think we have assumed this is for JMB Measurement but maybe you’re just wanting to enter a show or get a registration certificate?

Maybe I'm being daft but...What do you mean what would you call him?? Surely if you're getting a pony measured you just call them whatever they measure as😅

If it's for an official height certificate they can't put down what they thinkhe might grow to. Only what he actually is on the day.

I’ve always took this to be where the phrase “full up” sometimes comes into use ie actually slightly over specified height but not quite tall enough to class as next measurement up. As to what he’ll measure in as that’s only answerable by the vet on the day.

13.3hh but identifies as 13.2hh?

If you are entering classes restricted by height then they’ll be rounding rules written somewhere, website or handbook.

138cm is 13.3. a hand is 10cm/4inches & there's 2.54cm to 1in
For pony showing purposes, the conversions were done in the 90s across all BSPS, NPS etc showing classes:-

12.2 = 128
13.2 = 138
14.2 = 148
Whp and shp are
12hh = 123cm
13hh = 133
14hh = 143
15hh = 153

There are odd anomalies, such as Fell ponies have a max height of 14hh, this has been strictly kept to 142cms for competition purposes.

The OP has no worries about her pony measuring 13.3 unless it is a Welsh section C (max height of 138)and she wants to show affiliated, and I'm sure she would hope to have closer to 14hh/143 if doing M&M workers.
She will get an annual JMB cert if getting an official measure, and if necessary an annual every year till pony can get a life height at 8.
You cannot get a life height cert without having an annual in the previous year.

So it's rounded down from what the horse actually is? (Bear with I really really struggle with maths) So 13.3 is technically 55in/139.7cm but in showing terms the 13.3 "category" if you like starts includes ponies that are actually 138cm??
If this is right why?

There is no 13.3 category.
The 138 class is for ponies exceeding 128 and not exceeding 138. Pony classes in the uk have been in centimetres for at least 30 years now as I mentioned above - these were set down at the time all classes went metric. So, a 13.3 pony will be in a 148 max class.

To add, a 60cm jump class would have been a 2 ft, but not listed as 60.96.
70cm was 2ft 3.5ins, 80cms was 2ft 7.4 inches etc etc. Jump classes used to go up in 3inch increments from 2ft 3 start height then.

As to why? The governing bodies at the time made the decisions.

I had a pony who measured 127cms in 1990, absolutely at the top of 12.2, the following year for her life cert (when the JMB issued them at 7yrs) she was 127.2, still within height for breed and class, as 128 was by then the top limit.

By category I meant classed as 13.3 for showing purposes sorry... Daft question again but why did the governing bodies decide to do it this way?

ETA 1) sorry for hijacking a bit and 2) sorry for the stupid questions 🤦

There is no 13.3 showing catagory.

At 13.3 you'd either enter a class that was for over 13.2 up to and including 14.2 or if you were doing workers you'd enter a class for over 13hh up to and including 14hh

I've always taken Full Up to mean looks bigger (and may be bigger). but somehow has a height cert. All the Full up 14.2s towered over my actual 14.2 when stood next to each other.

Sorry everyone should of been more clear! Thanks for all your responses. I wanted to know as I was under the impression that the event centre near me still did SJ classes that were height classified. I was wondering if I could get him in a lower height class as the height for 13.3 is 90cm and he's still jumping 80 at max. Just found out the centre has changed hands and now doesn't enforce that at all! Thanks guys.

You could always compete HC if you're not bothered about the rosette
